Spencer, replying to your sig.

I've switched a game from MP to PBEM a few times. It really speeds up the early game. The only issue I've seen is that if you were playing a Sim-Moves game the number one player (the original host) goes first once it's converted. We've run into inadvertent disclosure issues.

Maybe you should be able to send e-mail from within game, but I've never found this to be a major slowdown in the game. If you are doing a fast turn-around game, leave you client open in the background.

Hit X when you see a message saying an attack is going on. This will center you on the most current message. If you are being attacked while off the map, oh well.

My sig only applies to PBEM but I wasnt aware that anyone had switched a game from MP to PBEM! (or is that something new ? ) In any case if thats do-able, its a step in the right direction, but we need a PBEM<-->MP switch (if possible).

I found that the combination of PtW and Outlook express open at the same time and switching from PtW to OE with the windows key caused errors and crashes. Many other people have commented on the same or similar problems. Civ3 should have been a windowed game. The point is that for PBEM you should be able to designate the next to play that sav by email address and it should be automatically sent when the turn ends.

Again, I'm only talking PBEM, we need some kind of 'combat replay' screen.

My constructive criticism is in my sig

I didnt feel like re-hashing my (and others) non-constructive critique of the game. I guess my last comment in this line is that its rather ironic that I've virtually given up on this game (aside from a few PBEM) but it's still not finished. I hope new players appreciate our effort as beta testers

I wholeheartedly agree, but not just for PBEM. Hotseat needs it too. In addition, this can be useful in any MP to see what hapened when you were looking away (say in diplomacy).

Even a simple text log would be an improvement.

Hotseat and PBEM and mechanicly same.
You just email in one case, and not in other case.

If one has probelm other one has problem.

P.S.
Replay feature or at least extra messages features are needed.

When AI declares war on me or uses espionage I should be informed.

Once, two turns have passed without me realising that AI declared war on me.

From that day I look closely on map every time.

P.P.S.
CtP series has good replay feature.

I used to be a critic. But I grew tired of it. Plus I was getting too many post count reductions.

I have come to the realization that the game is as good as it is ever going to be.

(1) For those who feel bad about having to buy at full price, Ebay is your friend!

(2) For those who regret buying civ3 then Ebay is also your friend, and so are the people mentioned in (1)!

for all the compaints that people like coracle put up I wonder if he ever considered selling his civ3?

I think the depth of many feelings was due to the high esteem with which we held the civ series (including smac in my case) and other games with Sids name on them. Many perceived civ3 to be a big let-down as a game and some of the actions by infogreed were disrespectful of the civ fans so the backlash against the game was pretty strong.

Right now there are 3 games on the market that I'm interested in and 2 more released soon. Unlike civ I didnt (and wont) run out and buy them. I'll wait to see the reactions from other players. Civ was on a 'I want it now' level, but no longer. If civ IV ever comes out, I'll wait till it goes gold.

I am disappointed in the multiplayer. Esp with regards to pbem/hotseat.

How can they take a step down from SMAC? I haven't figured that one out. I think Reynolds had rights to that code or something.

Combat messages are necessary! I can't figure out why there is no message box. Lazy programming.

Might turn out to be a good pbem game platform if they fix some stuff.

how's the general opinion of PTW after the 1.21-patch? are the MP-bugs fixed? and are the few SP changes useful?

Rather than fixing small bugs they should add new features to the game.
The "fixing time" is before the release of a game. Firaxis and Infogrames is playing with us with those patches.

In 3 or 4 months they'll release a new one with more fixes. The only fix-bug thing that they really should done is the problem with the "hot seat" feature, but they didn't do anything to fix that.

Putting new features in really isn't the point of a patch. Fixing bugs is. The 'small bugs' you complained were fixed made MP unplayble for a lot of players and slow for most of the rest.

Enhancements really do belong in an expansion.

I want scenarios!!!

There is so much potential wasted in leaving the editor as it is that it would really say much about Firaxis (and Infogrames) intentions at making the best game possible.

Master Zen, the reality of the situation is that Firaxis tried to make the best game that they could in the schedule and budget they were given. They are a company and they have to pay their employees and their expenses. I'm sure if you got rid of the time and money constraints they cold really take it to the next level.

There have been plenty of complaints about PtW. My biggest complaint is that I can't buy it in Sweden.

...or from play.com (no www.). It's generally cheaper that Amazon, and just as fast. I got my copy from them at about 60% of the price it will have when it finally arrive here in Norway.

I found out my buddy has a cracked version on his FTP.

Only problem is that it is pre-patch, so I will still not be able to play the AU games (I suppose).

Anyway, the morons at Infogrames obviously don't want my money, so why should I give it to them?
