IMO, pretty tasteless to compare the suffering of New Yorkers after 9-11 to the suffering of Germans after the friggin Holocaust.

And to be serious, yes, jokes about the Holocaust itself would nobody like in Germany (except neo nazis idiots), and I think this hasnīt anything to do with humor or not - the issue is just too sad to joke about it.
But OTOH Iīve seen jokes about Hitler on tv, some really funny.

As a New Yorker who witnessed Sept. 11th first hand, I can say I would infinitely prefer living with that memory rather than having, say, survived Dresden or being constantly associated with the national shame of the Holocaust.

Do any of you even know any Germans? (And passing them in the street doesn't count.)

Nah, the Germans are ok when they visit countries generally (that tourism survey ranked them as the best tourists) But you should start to worrry if those peace-loving Germans try to bring Panzers along on their vacations.

I had to go to Germany once, and liked the place and people so much that I've been there on holiday a couple of times since.
Always enjoyed myself there (the beer helps of course)
