the invisible man!!! (no, really...)

Quote:
Is he 'The Invisible Man' by H.G. Wells? It looks like as if three men walking behind are seen through the body of graduate student Kazutoshi Obana during a demonstration of optical camouflage technology at the Tokyo University in Tokyo Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003. The demonstration conducted by Faculty of Engineering Prof. Susumu Tachi is an early stage of his research that will eventually enable camouflaged objects virtually transparent by wearing an optical device. This photo was taken through a viewfinder that provides with a combined image of moving images taken behind Obana and him wearing a luminous jacket that makes a transparent effect. The technology can be useful for various professions such as surgeons who wish their own fingers and surgical tools won't block the view of affected parts and pilots who wish cockpit floors were transparent for landings. Not the first one. You also can't cover your head with that thing, unless you
don't care about seeing around.

Should we be impressed by their use of a projector?

IIRC, MIT has a $200 million program from the Defense Department for this kind of stuff.

What use is this militarily? The illusion is provided by looking through a special viewfinder. Unless you can covince all your enemies to wear them?

KH, the military is insane

the military gets all excited about beatles, which can sense heat farther than normal away, and want them studied so as to make better IR

the scientists say the beatlle can sense a fwe yards, the military thinks it is a few miles

so the military spends milliions (this was in biophysics BTW)

there are many other examples

What is referenced above of course isn't useful. However, they are trying to develop wearable computing technology that is useful as camouflage.

Re the military and science, the US military spends about $50 billion per annum on research and development.

yeah its something like this amount. Its all apart of the "Future Warrior" system, which is planned to include all sorts of far out stuff, like an exoskeleton to magnify human strength, speed, and indurence severl times, for example.

Technology like this could take stealth into a new level

Imagine invisible tanks, troops and aircraft?

You are absolutely right Getting excited about a band that split up more than 30 years ago and with half of the members already dead...

I can do that with PhotoShop, which is a lot cheaper. In fact, if you look at the part of the image that's "in" the green cloak, it doesn't mesh with the rest. Particularly the shadows, they don't look right at all.

Funny, I had no difficulty at all telling where he was in the picture. This project needs a lot more work.
