jdbgmgr.exe virus hoax!
You may have recently recieved an e-mail warning about the jdbgmgr.exe virus, which may have included an e-mail on the following lines:

Quote:
I just received a message today from one of my friends in my Address Book. Their Address Book had been infected by a virus and it was passed on to my computer. My Address Book, in turn, has been infected. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee Anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before
damaging the system. It's sent automatically by the messenger and by the Address Book, whether or not you sent emails to your contacts. I have checked, found it and deleted it. Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it:

DO THIS:
1. Go to start, Find or Search option.
2. In the files/folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure to search your C: drive (& all hard drives)
4. click "find now"
5. the virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe
DO NOT OPEN IT
6. Right click and delete it. It will then go to the Recycle Bin
7. Go to the recycle bin and delete it there as well.
IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THAT THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS. SORRY ABOUT THIS. I'M SURE EVERYONE IN MY ADDRESS BOOK WILL HAVE IT.
A quick warning to say that is utter bulls***. The virus, which infects the e-mail sender's PC, sends messages telling them to delete jdbgmgr.exe (which, ironically, looks like a teddy bear). This is untrue, and convinces you to delete the perfectly harmless file.

In other words, discard the e-mail, and don't send it on. More info can be found here: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/recory.shtml

About the 10th time I see this, too. Been around the Net for ages. They just don't die. *sigh*

There actually is a virus which attacks that file, but it's not very widespread these days.

It's a Java developer tool for Microsoft's Java virtual machine.

It's actually quite crafty, it gets computer illiterate people like me to delete important files (albeit the super-important ones are hidden, like format c: )

Anyway ... I earnt a lot of money from a similar hoax, it told people to download a batch file, put it on a floppy disk, and restart the computer. (The batch file was for format c: /autotest ).

It formated about half our town's computers .

One has to ask whether that is a hoax or a favour

I had to help several computer illiterate people with this. I have heard :

- "I'm glad I got this email, otherwise my computer could have been infected"
- "I wasn't sure if it was true, so I called my friend who sent me the mail, and she confirmed she had the file on her computer. My friend's father is a computer-expert, so I trusted her"
- "I fear the very email comprises the virus"

And some other sentences I forgot (it's late here). I had trouble to explain how unimportant this false alarm was. But I hope these persons are a bit more literate by now. Notably, they know the French speaking reference re Hawks hoaxes (link)

I wonder who could be behind this?
