Can't Save with Civ2 MP 1.2 and 3 !!
Well, at the bargain bin I got a version of Civ2 MP - French 1.2. I already had Civ 2 standard and CiC (2.62), that ran fine but were uninstalled for some time...
So I installed 1.2, but I realized that the "save" command doesn't work !! Upgraded to 1.3, same.
Reinstalled 2.42, then 2.62 (on another path, keeping 1.3), these save Ok...

What's the heck with that ?? I run W98SE, nothing fancy...

Fixed it myself, used Cedric's patch to upgrade 2.42 to MGE 1.3 - I just had to install it in English, no big deal - now this 1.3 DOES save ! Cool...

BTW, if some old vets here could lead me to good mods (better grâphics, rules change, ...). Thanks !

PDifolco ... Welcome to Civ2 @ Apolyton !

I don't tinker much with mods/rules etc ... but I'm sure many others will be able to help you

I like Mindseye's graphics - the original source of our Ironclad avatar - but don't go much for rule changes - makes Succession & Comparison games iffy and of course in PBEM or MP there would be loud cries of cheat!

Yeah he and his illicit companion just 'change the rules' by stipulating things like you cannot leave despotism till democracy and the like.

Thx Scouse Gits !
Coincidence, I was just pondering yesterday to use or not Mindseye Hires graphics... concluded no for the time, I don't like much photo-based graphics for sprites !
Instead I got "Facelift" mod, like it...

Well, is there no other good hires graphics mod ?

And a question while I am at it : with MGE 1.3 it looks I can play all scenarios, I mean is it CiC, FW and ToT compatible ?
looks like yes, I started a LOTR scenario already, but all those versions are sooooo confusing !

No you can't play all of the various flavours of scenarios with MGE 1.3. But there may be further patches at the place you got the MGE patch from.

You sure Doc - I believe that you can (cept ToT of course)
the GL has an explanation of the various variants if you care to look

ToT scenarios you can't play without ToT, as you say. Also, I didn't think you could play FW scenarios with either 2.42 or MGE. But I just checked and you can play them with MGE (oops ), though there is a patch for 2.42 - FW, and it is much smaller than the MGE patch.

Bwaaah, I'm lost with the versions ...
I thought that the versioning was :
"Classic" up to 2.42
Then CiC = 2.62
FW = 2.82
ToT=1.1 to 1.15, used as base for MP Civ 1.2 and MGE 1.3..
Or is it that ToT and MP Civ have different versioning ?

Anyway I'm sure that MGE works with CiC and FW scenarios. What is ToT about, and why functionalities weren't included in MGE ???
I *hate* marketing !

ToT is really a different game than Civ2 - although you can play what seems like a standard game of Civ in ToT it has some differences - particularly with things like food from mountains and the aggressiveness of the AI

2.42 easiest - MGE - ToT hardest

Thx again, I just browsed the Net for ToT and realized it was a kind of Civ2.5 and not an expansion pack as I thought it was !

Still waiting for advice on good mods.... I've just started a very complete-looking LOTR "adventure" game in 3 parts, with included batch to swap files, looks cool...

Is there a good SW mod also ? It'll remind me of SW Rebellion, was a nice game

I'm not sure if there is a mod (I think there is), but there are good SW scenarii!!

For instance, SW Insurrection is excellent!

Thx Cyrion !
Indeed I was myself just finding them at CivFanatics ... BTW this site is much less of a big messy depot than Apolyton ...

But this forum community is wonderfully helpful !
I wonder if there are still many old fools like me that dug off their Civ2 versions from their basement shelf and thought "Wow, it was THAT great, and still is !" rather than buying Civ3+PTW, that looks rather like a cash cow with 3D candy (and lost flexibility/modness ability)...
Maybe I'm biased, I bought my first PC under DOS (a 286/8 MHz ) just to play Civ1, a long long time ago !
