I don't often play Civ2 the basic game anymore, since it has been superceded on all fronts by SMAC (except for the trading commodities - but it's not a change that I personally disliked). I do however play a lot of scenarios and enjoy making my own. This is something that SMAC can't do nearly as well, since it is set in a much more context specific setting than Civ2.

It's worth buying Civ2 just to give the scenario editor a whirl. I maintain that this near-infinite replayability with scenarios is the main reason why people are still interested in Civ2 as a game, six years after its release.

I'm an original Civ player. And, I think that SMAC is similar to Civ II, with the combat systems being more similar.
However, in other means there are also some similarities, like the Probe Teams = Diplomats, SE = Governments, and so on.
Civ is a great game, I've played it for so many hours!

Civilization appears to be available for purchase at Crucialentertainment.com. Here is a link to the game. You have to register first.

Ned, this is not a download, is it? And I am in the USA so I think we need to find a site here as well.

Wish I could get my hands on the first Civ.

I played the original civiliztion (cardboard) back in the 70s & 80s.

Ah, the good old days. I used to like to play the Thracians, and park myself on the Bosporus. "Global" reach with ships and astronomy, while my hinterland on the Black Sea remained fairly secure.

MoO2: got me hooked into TBS in the first still place. Played solidly for six months, still gets played.

CivII: more complex stategically than MoO2, but missed MoO2's diplomacy system. Played solidly for about six months, still gets played.

TOT: CivII with lots more variety, but miss movies and advisors. Played solidly for about a year, still gets played.

SMAC: CivII with lots more variety, with aspects of MoO2 diplomacy mixed in. Played solidly for two months.

SMACX: I can't find it around here.

I miss the "Consequences - Schmonzequences" reply button from civ2.

Sorry if I am going on a complete curve, but I still think it's the most brilliant reply I have seen in a diplomacy screen so far.

Never have, never will. Been playing SMAC since June '99, SMACX since July '00. This is the only TBG (other than chess) or Sid Meier game I've ever played, will likely ever play. Have read nothing anywhere that provokes even any curiosity about any of the other civ games, but I can be kinda unidimensional.

I cut my teeth on Civ....missed Civ II entirely until long after I had SMAC, and then tried it a time or two, but never got into it the way I got into SMAC and the original.
