"Obesity is becoming a very important problem in the European region but also outside Europe," Roberto Dortellini, technical division director of WHO Europe, told The Associated Press. "It is a very major risk to the health of the European population."

In Greece, the problem is particularly acute because many people have turned away from the country's traditional Mediterranean diet toward fast food, officials say.

Europeans futter their kids with Coca Cola and McDonalds, so it's no wonder. I'm sure obesity will become a usual prejudice towards Europeans, and not Americans in some years, because Americans will soon learn to fight it correctly, while Europeans will be in the early pase of giving every sweet or fastfoody **** to their kids.

Used to be were fat, but at least we (most of us) dont smoke, and they all smoked, but they werent fat. Now it looks like they're catching up in being fat, but are they still all smoking?????

Just stick with the Med Food, it's healthy and delicious.

Greek, and french cheeses, French and Italian wines, Spanish and Turkish meat, Greek and Lebanonese Salads.

We have great food here, as well.

This is all bunk argument, since I presume a true slim-pill will be made in a matter of a decade or so.

LoMa : I didn't find any Europewide statistics re: smoking, but I found some for France (21% of the 15+ years old population smokes daily, and about 50% of the population had smoked daily or is still doing so)
Yes, Europeans smoke

. I heard there has been a clear fall of smoke consumption in Britain after a dramatic tax increase, but I don't know how true it is.

While French cheese might be tasty, it can be horrible for your health if you eat it too much (traditional production = unimportant to keep bacteria at bay). It is forbidden to import camemberts or alike in the US, and this forbiddance isn't only intended to piss the French

Edit : however, a varied diet with meat, veggies, fruit and cheese can only do you good in comparison with frigging burgers. Gosh I hate these.

there was a proposal some time back to ban certain unpastureurized cheeses aged fro more that a certain period, IIRC it was stopped. The risks involved are quite small. It is certainly possible to get a French Camembert in the US, though i havent purchased any lately

Most Mexico-imported food falls in this category, and it is rumored here French stinking cheese falls into it as well. In all cases, Camemberts in US' supermarkts are very very different from France's ones.
