The good news is that we can more than likely expect similar MASSIVE delays for every single future patch Firaxis will ever release for Civilization.
Just as well that Infogrames put so much effort into their anti-piracy, copyright-protection programs. It's so obvious that their effort is preventing 'creative' workarounds. Perhaps they have taken a leaf out of Microsoft's anti-piracy book?

It's not a warez version or something.
it just removed something that's not needed to play the game. Just only something that's needed to start it.
Besides that, without an 1.21 patch you won't be able to play online anyway.
