Bin them. They serve no purpose, and lie at the heart of our fossilised institutions.

You do have the problem of what to call the United Kingdom when they're gone, however.

Yes, but not very much more than your averge Brit makes Britain look silly.

I think that it's important that Britain has a monarchy to make it look silly. I mean, thanks to Germany losing World War I, Finland's monarchy attempt went all haywire, and we have to compensate it other ways. Take the Ahde family, for example. Father is a go-getting politician who has to resign from running the state lottery for sexually harassing employees. He's trying to make a comeback to the Parliament. Mother loyally supports her husband the lady-fondler, and also tries to get elected to the Parliament. The son videotapes himself sniffing coke, making famous the line "Hi, I'm Jussi Ahde, and I'm about to sniff some cocaine up my nose. And if anyone wants to make profit from this, half goes to me." At least he's not running for the parliament.

Makes you appreciate that absolute monarchy thingy, it does. Of course, we'd probably just get the Ahdes as the royals.

Hey you can´t just say "Hey, let´s depose Elizabeth, she´s from a german family"! She is the leader chosen by God to rule the British Empire and you own her obedience! It´s not a monarch if you just depose the queen and put Britney Spears in her place just because you think she´s prettier!

Uh, I think no one believes at that crap anymore...
I think it´s just like Rio´s carnaval... A party made for tourists to look idiot and spend their money. Brazilians occasionally go there to watch though.

I wouldn't mind if Elly was kept a queen but removed as the head of the Anglican church. We know that sooner or later England will get an atheist monarch and having them be the leader of the Anglicans is beyond silly.

They have to take the Anglican Church out of the government entirely. I would be insulted if I was there since I am an athiest.

It's funny to see how different nations have varying levels of respect for their monarchies. On another forum I've just upset loads of Dutch posters by suggesting that their Royal family keeps marrying fascists (well, ex-members of the Hitler Youth, and Spanish Carlists). Even the Dutch republicans got cross and shouty.

Had I made the same sort of muck-raking comments about the House of Windsor (nee Saxe-Coburg-Gotha) I doubt any British posters would have batted an eyelid.

Surely getting rid of hereditary peers in the House of Lords is far more important. They have power by birthright.

Why does having a head of state that does virtually nothing make us look silly? Yes they do stupid things, but it's all just a PR exercise. At least we don't have to live with the rulings of silly heads of state.

There are only 98 heriditaries left and they are going within the next few years. We will be having a mixed elected/appointed lords soon

The reason the monarchy has survived so long in Britain is because of 2 great monarchs by any standard - Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.

Put Charles and Camilla on the throne and all bets are off.

Vicky was very umpopular for large periods of her reign, and she also thought she was in charge, which Gladstone IIRC although it could have been Disraeli loved to point out was bollocks

That's the point - Queen Victoria was very unpopular to start with, there was a strong republican movement in Britian the first half of 19th century, but she outlasted all her critics.
