I'm still new to the game, but uni, sub, creative looks real good so far (and since I have v 1.2, I get either LHW or RHW as well)

Minuses seem to be low grav, ground & .5 food.

I highly recomend DL the patch and playing v1.31 as it is much improved. There are lots of fun combinations, as you play more you will probably get away from creative. Use whatever you enjoy and have fun. Happy mooing.

PS See thread "Custom Race Best Stats" for lots of good info.

Okd N Slow, watch out for much of the advice or positions posted here as they come from a 1.31 perspective. Version 1.2 is just a different game altogether. You can get spoiled in 1.2 with the AI surrending so easily, Gyros being so powerful as are plasma cannons and of course creative being only 6 picks. IIRC in 1.2 they had a different perspective on attacking, inititive was not used.
Some crash issues were address in 1.31, it is pretty rare now, but not unheard of.

Yeah, I might get 1.31 when they lump it in with MOO3 as a discount package -- maybe 2, 3 years from now. I finally picked up Civ III that way (and now have four copies of Civ II). -- Should open up my SMAC sometime this summer. My Round “Tu-its” are rusty but they do move.

I’m happily settling into MOO2 as a regular game in with my comfortable mix of Civ II, LOM, & the Generals; heard some good things about the Heroes of Might & Magic -- will get it when I see it (cheap, of course -- I’m patient about these things).

You should have been able to find Heroes II and III very cheap by now, IV is still some what new.
They have several packages that includes II & III.
Homm is one of my all time favs.

So where have all the Moo2 players gone?

Btw Unification with just about anything is a good custom race

Probably playing Galciv trying to data patch for Moo3. Me, I am in the late mid game of a special run in MM7 posted on 3DO boards. Been at it a fews days and starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The starting parting had zero for starting attributes and no equipment, not even a knife, so it was a very hard and slow start. No skills either very ugly.

vmxa1,

What is your current opinion of CalCiv and Moo3(as patched so far). I am still waiting to purchase either one pending more reviews and patches. Meantime I still play Moo2 and visit these threads.

Well I found some fun in GalCiv for a few games, but without much combat and no tactical combat, I was not not anxious to keep playing. I expect to fit in a game from time to time.
I has not gotten back to Moo3 since the data update. I am waiting for the patch and then will play again.
I think in the long run, I wil prefer Moo3 as i has tactical combat and the battles were fun.
I expect to play more Moo1 and Moo2 in the next year than either of those games thought.
They will fall in with Space Empires IV as games I play every now and then. That does not make them bad games.

Ok I had a unusual map in Moo1. Silicoids not in the game, but only 7 normal ecology planets, plus Orion.
Only 1 near me and one near Mrrs. One more 5 parsecs away form me. No planet that could not be colonized.
Never seen that before.

vmxa1,

Thanks for the download, will check it out. I am away from home all this week, so just reading Moo3 manual and playing a little moo2 when I can. If you have the log done, I would like to see it as 72 turns sounds very impressive. Thanks.

Here it is:

T0 - move all sci workers to industry. Design Cruiser as NO comp, 9 two shot nukes and extended fuel cells. This should take 19 turns to build. Note I make the missile array as 1, 2, 2, 2, 2.
Design Destroyer as the same, except two 2 shot nukes (4 missiles). Design Scout with 1 nuke.
Start CA on HW, send out colony ship to Abbith(?), not sure of name now, send out scouts.
T2(?) colonize planet and set to build DD (destroyer).

Now once scouts have done all they can send back to refit.

T15(?) not sure when I did this, but around this time you can buy the CA (cruiser).
One thing that is variable is when to refit the scouts. I found that sooner is better as it is usually needed to allow other ships to retreat. You also can not take down SB (star base) with just a 9 shot cruiser.
Sent CA to Pund and capture it.
Txx (did not note exactly when but before T18)
Kill Silicoids frigates and retreated to Pund to await the DD and DE.
DE (scout or frigate) and DD and CA all to Cryslon. I started a frigate on pund as a place holder. You will need an OP (outpost soon). Capture CRY and srt OP. (Silicoids eliminated)
T18 buy DD and send to Pund to Cryslon. Now refit scout that was not already refit.
T22 OP done, start DD, send all to Trillar.
T24 OP on Caelueb (SP), send ships on to Trillar.
T25 DD done on Cry, sent to Trillar.
T30 Capture Trillar, switch Cry to OP, send fleet to Vagn.
T31 Capture Vagn (Trils eliminated).
T33 Finished Biosphere on Draco, start CA. Note in a tough game, you would not want to build anything other than ships and outpost.
T34 OP on Vij, send fleet to Gnol, buy OP on Abbith.
T35 Send 2nd fleet to Hastun (can read my notes on this name)to OP.
T40 Took Nazin and last planet on Gnol.
T41 Elim Gnol
T42 Elim Darlok, capture Poseidons.
T43 Buy OP on Abbith, send to Lar, fleet to Lar, OP on Cry is done.
Better planning could probably reduce delays here, but I was lazy.
T44 OP sent to Zibbat, fleet to Zib. I am not sure now which planet this is, but one place I send an OP, I did not look to see what was there and boom, no planets, not even gas.
This wasted more time as I had to send them some place else to reach Klackons or who ever I was after.
T50 Capture Aden.
T53 Capture Orf (?), I hope that is the correct name, it is all I have in my notes.
T56 Capture Katab.
T57 capture Liuce, defeat Sssla fleet, block (not sure what I meant here).
I know one race had a few ships and a BB (battleship) and I was trying to ensure that they did not do any damage.
T58 Elim Klac, learned Research Labs via my research. I have had a few tech from captured planets, not important. I got Battle Pods from Kolden and designed a new CA that I built on Cry.
Sent OP to Draco.
T62 Elim Saks, fleet to Draco.
T71 Capture Fieras.
T72 Capture Hycreles (name not clear), capture Que.
Game over.
This is probabaly not a totally complete log, but at least gets the concept across.
I was making ships on most planets and even cranked out a few SB so I could make cruisers.
I was too lazy to stay on top and buy some things when I could have. IOW, this likely could have been done faster.
With this map, two finds where close at hand, but no splinter colonies and no leaders.
Now that I think about it I did get an offer for a fighter, ut could not afford him at the time. I got colony leaders late in the game. I am not sure assigned them all, it is not uncommon for me to see the end coming an ignore that aspect.

I had it ready days ago, but the site went down. It is fairly complete and mostly accurate. I did not note all my builds and may have inadvertently left off a item, but it should be close enough.

No research. Somewhere after I had eliminated several races, I relented on the planets that were too far away or did not have star base and let them research.
You will not really have a chance to use any tech anyway.
I got some from the planets I captured that was useful such as Biospheres and maybe Hydro.
It can not be done if you do not design the ship without computers and can not get it built in 19 turns. Actually you will be buying it sooner.
Were you able to win in something close to 80 turns?

BTW in a small universe with a few breaks it probably could be done in 30 turns. Change a few racial traits to get more production. I may give that a spin down the road a bit.
Right now I have jumped back into DiabloII to play a Druid. Not sure how far I will go without a break, I am in Act II now.

Hi guys, good to see Moo1 and Moo2 are not forgotten...

Just wanted to add my own input on custom races. Population wins you the games.... (thus Aquatic or subterranean is always a key race pick in MOO2)

Yes built w/o computer, no did not make 80 turns, but will try again soon, thanks.

Brutalisk, you can get lots of slaves using telepathic cruisers.

That's right, assuming u can beat my defenses... In those crucial turns that we dont have contact my starbases along with defnding fleet are in place ensuring an anti-blitz strategy.

I wasnt reffering to playing against the AI, even on "impossible" the AI is weak. When playing against the AI, almost any combination can win you the game.

I am reffering to multiplayer... and to maps of medium size+

vmxa1,

I left that first try back east, but I got the cruiser on time and made the first conquest on time, but not too long after that I started slipping. Did not pick up bios by conquest (but that should not really matter) and I got sloppy in a battle and lost a couple of ships that I should not have and that set me back as they had to be replaced in order to take out starbases. When I try again I will closely follow your log and note where we differ. Good luck in your current efforts.
