But the GW walls can't be sabotaged. Most of my attack groups will include x number of diplos/spys to take care of anyone that thinks that city walls will protect their city from ferrets. and sending 30 shield diplos to demolish more expensive improvements can be fun in it's own right.

Yes, you're quite correct, the diplo takes down wall is not an AI strategy.
But it is so prevalant in MP that no one really builds walls anymore. (unless it's a city with many many many improvements. And even then, it's rare)

you could go in and change the name on the opponent and rename his city "next" ...

Since the attack would usually happen that turn, unless you saw considerably more defense than you expected, not a waste of a dip by any means.
But If I think I have overwelming force, I won't bother with the dip either.

The answer is easy: cowards and fear hares built GW, all others ST. GW is useless against attack from sea. Against attacks on landside you can build fortresses on strategic points. You allways need vet units. With ST you save monex every turn and every ship becomes vet after a fight. It´s nice to attack poor barb units with ships. During my SP-time I left a 2size-city at the coast for the barbs to produce vet-ships.

well you could say the same thing with size 2 cities for units as well...

i agree, i dn't like wall and its a last resort if i am getting my @ss handed to me which is very rare.

Ahhh, didn't quite get it at first, leaving the city for the barbs to capture. For some stupid reason i thought you meant building one so you could send ships out from it to attack barbs on the coast. Silly me.

hadn't thought about the idea of ships being produced from a barb city - i also pictured ships attacking the barb coast and becoming vet.

I suppose if you have Leo's in conjunction with Sun Tsu, you could get barb ships, upgrade them and then make them vet, although i don't know any barb ship upgrades other than trireme to caravel that produces a unit than can attack
