BEST of the BEST
How many of us will be interested in having a Hall of Fame for CIV3 players of this Forum ?

I think it would be a good idea because you could download the Best players games to see some strategy.

Bragging Rights also.

You'll learn in time. In my year and a half here, I eventually understood the wisdom of the great banana, but it wasn't easy nor short. Stick in 'Poly, and you shall see the light too

Every poll that is done on 'Poly, if it is to be taken seriously, should have "banana" as one of the options. Usually it's the last option and means "I Don't care".

In your poll, for instance, the last option would be something like:

"They need a Hall of Bananas".

ACK!

Could be nice ... but what will it be based on?

Highscores in diferent difficulty settings to start with and ...?

Why not just start a Civ III ladder straight away? Then you wouldn't have to calculate in scores or keep up-to-date a HoF.

I think the points you get are already dependent on the difficulty level. The only rule should be only that the games must be played unmodded.

For other rules you can always "steal" ideas from other civ-sites.

Actually, there is an extremely active Civ3 ladder already out there: www.myleague.com/civ3ptw .... 1000 members approx, well-run, organized, players of all motivations and skill levels.

(Oh come on, the PTW forum folks know I haven't plugged the ladder on months.)

Check us out. There are a decent number of Apolytoners there already!

What I have seen out here from other sites about rules is:

You pick your Civ , Difficulty Level, Victory conditions.
Everything else Random. No MOD games!

You submit saves of 4000BC, 10AD, and the last turn before you win. Maybe a txt file explaining what to do to win.

you could have the Top Five ,Top Ten in each Difficulty level.
or Top Five ,Top Ten in Victory Condition.

Hi everybody...

Personally I could care less one way or another. I don't come here to compete with others or see who's better than who or whatever. I play Civ because it's fun and I come to this site to be with others who for the most part think the same thing. I'd never do very good because I don't play to be the best I play to have fun.

So as long as I'm not forced to participate(which I'm sure wouldn't be the case) I say those of you who want it go for it.

I don't really care about ranking, but it would be fun / useful to have people show off there best games... could be very educational for newer players, too.

Maybe not even whole games. In the recent AU game where the surprise neighbor was Greece, some people (myself included) got off to some fabulous starts...

It would be just a place to say, Hey everyone this my Best game ever and I had fun doing it!

Have you checked out Apolyton University in the Strategy forum? It's designed more for fun and learning than for serious competition, but it's still a great place to see how your skills measure up against other players'.

Another idea would be a "Hall of Great and Interesting Games," perhaps with a topped thread with links pointing to threads discussing particular games. Such a Hall could include not only high-scoring romps starting from fantastic starting positions, but also games like Aeson's "So Very Cold" game where a player overcame a terrible starting position.

I wouldn't join as I'd be too tempted to reload when one of my cities mysteriously and randomly culture swaps, or when an elite cavalry unit loses to a 1hp spearman.

GL with it tho.

Even as this poll is closed I might post my comments about this.
I would love to have a hall of fame. People which mastered the game and achieved a triumphal victory over his enemies. Would be interesting to download the saves and try to recreate the success or learn some new strategies.
Learning by doing is the name of the game

Maybe you should check out the CivFanatics HOF. Sounds basically like what you are talking about.

This thread contains most of the discussions about the games. (it gets to the games about 100 posts in)

In my view, the CivFanatics Hall of Fame should more properly be called the Hall of Milking. The Hall of Fame is not so much about building great civilizations as it is about manipulating the rules to delay victory for centuries in order to run up the score. Which, in turn, takes away a lot of the incentive for good players who don't enjoy milking to participate. Further, even among those who do participate, the games they went to the trouble of milking will not necessarily be their best-played games. I'm not saying that all the games in the Hall of Fame are milked (I've never investigated that), but the top ones certainly are.

Certainly, you'll find well-played games in the Hall of Fame. But the best? I'm a lot more skeptical of that.

Certainly 'best' is a relative term. It sounded like at least a few of the posters here were talking about rankings by in-game score... so I pointed out CivFanatics HOF which does that already.

No, I do not want a HOF here at Apolyton. I have my own style of play which would not compare well to early warriors.

What I want is to regain the HOF of my own PTW with modded rules!

Open up the HighScores.cv3 file and add a line like this:

Brennus 25 2866 3 4 1

Code:
Name Civ(Color) Score Difficulty VictoryType Victory/Loss
Brennus 25 2866 3 4 1
Color: 0-31, matches up to the way they are listed in the editor.
Difficulty: 0-5 Chieftain-Deity
VictoryType: Domination(0), Conquest(1), Cultural(2), Diplomatic(3), Spacerace(4), Retired(5), Histograph(6)
Victory: 1 Loss: 0

Ok, I know I am naive on this, but how does one cheat in CivIII? In the case they talked about you post a save, so use of the editor to up the map would be availble to all and if you turn off the seed that is know. I guess that leaves reloading.
Have editors for save games been created?

You don't really need one to modify a save. A simple hex editor and basic knowledge will do.
