This is BS - it was never the case that ancient peoples believed the world was flat and modern people believe that it is spherical. Nor is it fair to bash the church for this (there are plenty of other reasons for church bashing though).
Check out the link I provided above - it gives a historical account of various views.

You gotta love this disclaimer from Boris' site:
Quote:

The Flat Earth Society is not in any way responsible for the failure of the French to repel the Germans at the Maginot Line during WWII. Nor is the Flat Earth Society responsible for the recent yeti sightings outside the Vatican, or for the unfortunate enslavement of the Nabisco Inc. factory employees by a rogue hamster insurrectionist group. Furthermore, we are not responsible for the loss of one or more of the following, which may possibly occur as the result of exposing one's self to the dogmatic and dangerously subversive statements made within: life, limb, vision, Francois Mitterand, hearing, taste, smell, touch, thumb, Aunt Mildred, citizenship, spleen, bedrock, cloves, I Love Lucy reruns, toaster, pine derby racer, toy duck, antelope, horseradish, prosthetic ankle, double-cheeseburger, tin foil, limestone, watermelon-scented air freshner, sanity, paprika, German to Pig Latin dictionary, dish towel, pet Chihuahua, pogo stick, Golf Digest subscription, floor tile, upper torso or halibut.

Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...
Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...
The full moon is rising over dark water
And the fools below are picking up sticks
And the man in the gallows lies permanently waiting
For the doctors to come back and tend to him,
The Flat Earth Society is meeting here today, singing happy little lies,
And the bright ship Humana is sent far away with grave determination...
And no destination,
Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...
Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...
Yeah, nothing feels better than a spray of clean water
And the whistling of wind on a calm summer night
But you better believe that down in their quarters
The men are holding on for their dear lives,
The Flat Earth Society is somewhere far away,
with their candlesticks and compasses
And the bright ship Humana is on its way with grave determination...
And no destination,
The Flat Earth Society is meeting here today, singing happy little lies,
And the bright ship Humana is well on its way with grave determination...
And no destination,
Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...
Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie... Lie lie lie...

It has always struck me as being bizarre that the idea of God as a creator was considered sufficient explanation for the complexity we see around us, because it simply doesn't explain where he came from. If we imagine a designer, that implies a design, and that therefore each thing he designs or causes to be designed is a level simpler than him- or herself, then you have to ask, "What is the level above the designer?" There is one peculiar model of the universe that has turtles all the way down, but here we have gods all the way up.
- Douglas Adams
Terry Pratchett has four Elephants stand on a Turtle who swims through space in his Discworld novels.

The answer to this question is nothing.
How can something beneath the top still be considered God? That's the question I have for Douglas Adams.
