Willem, drop me a line if you ever want to chat. I have some ability to empathise, and I'm not all that far away from where you will be, as the fates have it.

Come back soon.

I'm in Vancouver, so the same applies to me as NYE.

I know we've disagreed, but I've always enjoyed our debates.

I wish you luck on your new ventures on the island. I hope you find everything you are looking for, some answers on the road of life.

Good luck and God bless.

So what do you think I'm doing now?

There's been a couple of times now that hanging out here has been a good way of getting things off my chest, before I get overloaded and start beating my head against the wall.

Yeah...the ocean is special. Really started missing it when I spent 4 years in Chicago.

I spent one summer living in a squatters cabin, built by the draft dodgers in the 60s, almost right on the beach. It was a truly magical place. Many times, just when I was starting to fall asleep, the sound of the waves made me feel like I was being rocked to sleep. It was very soothing. Unfortunately, that place is gone now.

One thing I've always regretted is that I never made it out to Long Beach, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. So I'll be getting a chance to rectify that mistake.

This is my hometown area. Stop by and take a look if you're passing through. No (legal) jobs there, just grass.

I hope you can take the tragic events of the recent past and make something good happen. Good luck.

Victoria is indeed a pretty city...jobs are tight like everywhere of course.

Good luck. In some ways, I envy you and the journey you're about to take.

Well I'm planning on getting back into the hospitality industry so hopefully I won't have to much trouble finding something. I was just looking at the classifieds in the Times-Colonist and there's more jobs in that field available now than there is here in this area, and the tourist season hasn't even started yet.

It's been on mind for years to go back there some day, and since I have to start over anyway, I may as well take the leap now.

Thanks. I guess it will depend on what I make of it. I can't really complain about my life here overall, except for this last little stretch, but I know I can do better.

Yeah, that's kind of a hard one. But I wanted to upgrade anyway, so I can just buy something more powerful when I get settled in there. A Celeron 400 just doesn't quite cut it with me anymore. I want to get at least a 2 ghz, which means that I'd have to replace the motherboard and the RAM as well. Plus my video card only has 8 meg on, and I'd like to have at least 32, with capture capability. In other words, pretty much a whole new computer.

It's going to a good friend of mine and I told him that I'll eventually want my hardrives and disks back. Once I'm ready, I'll just get him to ship it all out to me. It's the data I care about not the hardware. That I can get anywhere.

Yeah, I'm bound to remember that one for awhile as well. Amazing how a stupid accident can change someone's life so quickly. I suspect in a few years I'll think it was the best thing that ever happened to me though. At least I'm going home again because of it.

I was afraid I had mistaken you with someone else, just couldn't imagine a 46 year old with a ... bussiness like that.

Good luck, man. I hope you'll succeed. I'll probably go away for good too, if my life will show no perspective of being interesting.

What can I say, I try to think young. And believe me, there are alot of middle aged tokers out there. We grew up in the sixties remember. Not all of us sold out and became stockbrokers.

Willem your story has certainly touched us although i dont know you in the slightest., just happened to stray into the OT section.

We've been down a similar process though not because of death or illness....a radical life change is scary and makes us feel very unsure whilst starting out. But very often it is neccesary to move ahead in our lives.

Our thoughts are with you...be safe along your new path.

It has nothing to do with the impending death. In my heart I've wanted to go back there, for many years now. I've missed the place ever since I first left. My mother's passing will only be the final tie that's been keeping me here, especially in light of everything else that's happened to me lately.

I think everyone has a place where they feel the most grounded. Victoria and Vancouver Island have always done that for me. It's always felt like home, and there's nothing keeping me here anymore.

And thanks for the kind sentiments.

Hey, we took in all the American draft dodgers, we were at the forefront of the hippie culture in many ways. Unfortunately, I just caught the tail end of it. By the time I had hit my stride, alot of my peers had gone Disco, at least in my home town.

There were still a bunch of them hanging out in BC though, especially along the coast. I was one of them. I was a singer/songwriter/photographer back then.
