Comments on Vel's bizzare, off-topic thread
Though I nearly cringe to do so....here's the off-topic comments section....if you guys hate it, I'll not add anything further to it....

Wow, Vel. First we see your strategy posts and your guide, then your high scores, everyone thinks you are this hard ass dude, and then.... poetry. Takes a brave soul indeed to lay themselves out like that. Bravo!

I must say that some passages reminded me greatly of the only thing I am addicted to more than SMAC(X)... Jordan's The Wheel of Time series....

Quoting from Vel:
"
She comes to me at night
Through the thick mists of my sleep
And from the land of all my dreams.
Dusky skin, sparkling eyes,
A breath-stealing smile which
She reserves only for me.

The sea of Raven hair which cascades
Down and across her shoulders.
We move to a music only we two
Can hear. Completely lost in one another.

She disappears with the rising sun,
Vanishing much as the early morning fog
When the sun gently kisses it away.
I sigh quietly as I awaken....wishing.
She comes to me at night,
But for now, only in my dreams....

^^^^^^^
I walk the Night alone,
Surrounded by mists and shadows,
Viewing the world through exotic, wondering eyes,
And walking where no one else dares.

I walk the Night alone,
Alone but unafraid.
Becoming one with the shadows,
Inhaling the very essence of the Night,
~ And ever thinking of you....
"
-end quotes

If those two passages aren't about Lanfear, then I must be going nuts!

And yet more:

--quoting:
"There is no end or beginning to anything
And nothing is ever set in stone.
The world is filled with people, possibilities,
And most importantly, with Magic."
--end quote

And how does every Wheel of Time novel start:
"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that
gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose on the great plain called the Caralain Grass.
The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning. "

*******
Just shows that either 1) Vel shares more than one of my addictions or 2) The world is very very small, and the intellectual one more so.

Nice works though Vel, in all seriousness.

Thanks Kinjy.....I'm glad you enjoyed them....and there's another anthology of about that same size I will post here, if there is interest in seeing more.....a very different "feel" to the second set, but an interesting one, I think....

As to the poetry....I thought long and hard about it before posting here, but it seems to be that it (the poetic impulse) is actually the other side to the coin of battle. What I mean by that is this:

Every student of battle, every "brave knight," as it were, must have something which lies beyond the combat....the thing which makes all the battling worthwhile....for me then, the poetry represents the things that are worth fighting for, and in that sense, the poetry is but an extension of the Strategy Guide itself.

True, it is entirely possible that a person can hone their battle skills relentlessly, and to the exclusion of all else, and they will be a Master of the Art of War, but theirs will be a largely empty existance....devoid of any purpose beyond the battling itself. As an example, I point to the Huns: Stunningly fierce in combat, but combat was pretty much all they had, and in the end, they were ushered off the world stage.

Contrast that to the Scottish Highlanders, the society of "Warrior-Poets," whose legends and stories of valor are woven into the very fabric of modern society.

Even if a "Warrior-Poet" is of lesser skill than a relentless student of the art of war, it is the poet who will likely win, because of what he is fighting for....the poetry becomes a part of his every act and action, and that nearly always makes him stronger....and even if not, then he dies with more honor, and certainly will be remembered long after the relentless general is lost among the pages of history.....

As to the stories you mentioned, I had not heard of them until just now, but something tells me there is a new addiction on the wind for me.....

Everyone should encourage him to post the other set. They are equally as wonderfully. He is truly a very talented writer. His work needs to be in every available forum. I cant wait to see those novels on Bookstore shelves...
