I think stakes are insta-kills only in the Buffy universe. Elsewhere, they immobilize a vampire, and often leave it in a dessicated state, but do no lasting harm. Decapitation likewise causes no lasting harm unless garlic or blassed communion wafers are also stuffed in the mouth, and with older vampires (or those of different cultural backgrounds) even that won't work. The vampire retains control of all severed body parts.

The only clothes a vampire can actually wear are those that were buried with it -- if it appears to be wearing something else, it is an illusion (thus, no chain shirts unless they were buried with one -- and who in their right mind would bury a potential vampire with a chain shirt?).

What if I encase its head in a cement block?

I thought in a similar way, too. how about we chop him into pieces, and then lock each piece into a chest of its own?

Why go through all that effort? Just wait for the sun.

BTW, are you doing this while the vamp is staked or unstaked? It does make a difference, you know.

Doesn't silver have an adverse effect on vampires as well? (like in 'Blade')

Well the vampire might not be so accomodating unless I, uh, persuade it.

Cutting it's head off? What's the difference? If I can't stick it with a stake, I might have to cut its head off. If I can, I might just want to cut its head off to be sure.

Well, some vampires instantly heal any wound dealt by something it isn't vulnerable to; others are insubstantial to such things (two different effects, but same result).

Wait a second, wasn't the entire point of being a vampire that you lived forever? If so, why would you ever get buried?

In most traditions, the corpse of one slain by a vampire remains a corpse until it is actually buried. Transformation into a vampire can be prevented by mangling the corpse (staking and decapitation), cremation, or simply leaving it above ground in the open to rot.

Vampire are undead. 'Living', in this case, is a relative term.
