Clue #1: Evil aliens attempt to take over the world.
Clue #2: up up down down left right left right B A start
I just want to apologize for giving this hint and not responding. Things suddenly got very busy at work and I had to turn my attention away from this competition. The answer, as someone else guessed, was indeed "Contra".

Ok, though I've done loads so I'm running out of good ideas.

Amiga, early 90s.

Puzzle game, where you might encounter tumblers, risers and exploders.

At the present time I only have hints that'll make it too easy. If I find some better hints, that doesn't give away the game, I'll post them...

Ahh, sorry forgot it...

I played it on the Amiga, not sure about the time though... The game also had a sequal (Also to the Amiga), which looks pretty much like the first one...

How in the hell did I get it from those clues? I really have missed my calling in life.

I've done so many, it'll take me a while to come up with another good one. Anyone that's raring to go, be my guest.

I don't have any ideas at the moment (I'm not good at coming up with clues that does reveal the game too much...)
