Besides, after a few weeks, a cat doesn't seem to feel the pain (saying they still do but are too proud to show it is ridiculous). They go on just as they were before the declawing. It is surely no worse than when men are circumcised.

If I couldn't get it declawed, I'd never get a cat. If I didn't get the cat, and no one else got it, it'd be put down.

So if the pain wears off after a few weeks, it's okay to mutilate a pet? Nice. And many cats don't go on as before declawing, as the links showed. Many suffer long-term negative behaviorial changes after being declawed.

You can look back for the infamous circumcision thread for my opinion on that practice as well. Another bad argument.

No, I do, but leather/meat isn't really comparable, as it doesn't involve the ongoing torture/discomfort of an animal, and it is using parts of an animal that are being killed anyway. I don't object to meat-eating (I am vegetarian for health reasons), because for some people it is a vital part of their diet, and it is very possible to keep and kill animals humanely (which is why I urge people to eat free-range, organic).

Using animals for food/clothing needs isn't the same as amputating parts of a supposedly beloved pet in the name of preserving some cloth.

Nor do I, but I do have problems with the inhumane treatment animals raised for fur purporses undergo. I think it's sick to keep minks, rabbits and the like in such conditions (the ones than ensure the desired coat).

It'd be much harder to love an animal that destroyed my furniture and forced me to spend thousands to replace it. I wouldn't be too happy with that cat, I can tell you that.

Unless you're fond of sisal furniture, it's pretty easy to prevent cats from scratching valuable things, by giving them less valuable things to scratch.

A lot of cats don't scratch anything at all, and those who do can be trained easily to scratch stuff you both agree on, and to leave yours alone.

Cats are acutely aware of their lack of defenses when declawed, and their reactions to perceived threats can be severe. One place I live had a declawed Siamese next door, and it was on it's back patio, somehow got up to the top, then jumped down into my patio by mistake.

It paced around for a while, unable to get out, and then when I saw it (it didn't know me, I'd just moved in), I went out there, and the poor cat just freaked - trapped, a stranger closing in on it, and no way out. This cat was literally scared crazy, because it made a simple mistake of cat exploration and got trapped.

You like cats, but don't love them, something that to me is really needed to share an appartment/house for more then a dozen years.

Get a catnip plant and rub catnip over a sacrificial scratching post. That solves it for all cats.
