What's the coolest TBS & RTS unit ever?
What's the coolest unit you have tried in a strategy game? Both turn-based and real-time strategy counts. There are too many units to make a poll, so you have to suggest them yourself.

The Mammoth tank in C&C/RA, and the Berta cannon in TA, for me.

I have three favorites I can think of right away.

1) Siege Tank (Starcraft, Terrans) The sound when they fire is just awesome, and they outrange anything when turned into siege mode.

2) Space bomber (Call to Power) I waited all the game to get those. To bad they were so expensive. If you were the only tribe in space, the AI couldn't do anything to stop them.

3) Dark Templar (Starcraft -Brood Wars, Protoss). In multiplayer, a DT rush and air insertation of 4 DT:s from the flank could rip up a whole enemy base in minutes. People often forgot to get base defense early, not to mention detectors to see stealth units.

Siege Tanks are cool, but Mammoth tanks have a combined anti tank/ anti air/ anti infantry capability. It's self healing. It has great armor....It's almost flawless.

The Mammoths only weakness is speed. But with cool I didn't mean "effective" or "powerful" but "adding to gaming value". A powerful unit normally add to the gaming value but more is needed to get full joy. I think Siege Tanks are more fun than Mammoths, but that's probably because I consider Starcraft a better game.

I dislike Starcraft. Because I suck at it.

Well, cool units: The Subterrenean APC in Tiberian sun. It pops up in the middle of your base, and there is nothing you can do about it!!!

Yeah, fill it with engineers and you own the base! But it only works against newbies.

Sonic tanks from Dune 2 (with the bug that makes them long-range) were awesome. Just put them all in a line and move forward slowly - you will own the map. Plus the sound they make as the decimate the enemies is quite nice.

Zerglings and Ultralisks. That was one of my favorite ways to kill someone in Starcraft, build a huge swarm and just completely overwhelm their defences. Have like 200 zerglings, and a group or two of ultralisks. It's great, and death by zerglings is such a humiliating way to die, too.

When you first start attacking they'll probably laugh at you.. but after they've killed hunreds of units and all their defences are going up in flames and zerglings are all over their base killing workers while more of them still flooding into their base, the 'WTF!??'s will start up.

It's lame-ness depends on how you execute it and how you customize it. For example, a 6-speedling attack is one of the most elegant maneuvers in the game, as it is very difficult and very rewarding.

If I could carry the costeffective awesomeness of just ONE unit with me anywhere, I'd select the med tanks. (RA1)

Med tanks ownz joo OMG OMG.

Nothing beats Med tanks in performance/cost/speed/upgrade/availability etc etc.... in any game. Tell me a unit that single handedly dominates a game like med tank/heavy tanks do in RA1.

In starcraft single most effective unit is hydralisk. Dragoon you say? Two Hydras agst 1? I dont think so.

Nothing beats Hydralsik in performance/cost/speed/upgrade/availability etc etc....

if I can take two it would have to be reavers and dropship. WTF, reavers shouldnt be allowed into ****ing dropships!

As for civ, if you can have MWs and impis, I wont play you.

Total Annihilation had a whole slew of cool units too. Especially some of the player made ones. I especially like some of the naval units in that game. I really should look into what it takes to make custom units.

What was the name of that huge robot, Kilgroth?

The heavy tank is more cost-effective than the medium tank. So are late-game zerglings.

My favorite scenario in all of Starcraft was the one where you had to defend for 10 minutes or so, and right at the end there was the big zergling rush.

ACK!

Starcraft: Ghost. i just like the idea of being all stealthy and being able to nuke the other player without them knowing!

C&C: Stealth Tank. I remember when my friends and I first started playing i made 5 of these and hunted down all my friends harvesters...

Red Alert: Mig's. Made an airforce and DOMINATED the game. No unit on the map was safe from the Red Army!

Kilgroth- I think it was Kilgore.. .can't remember for certain- but Total Annihilation certainly was a really good RTS game with a great persistent online world- I loved fighting in the Boneyard for planets!

Best TBS unit has to be the Battleship in Civ1, or maybe hovertank cloaked probe teams in SMAC.

Best RTS unit (well, my personal favorite) is the High Men Titan from WBC2. When he starts smashing down towers with his enormous sword shouting "Justice" I practically cream my pants.

AoK: War Elephants or whatever the Chinese Unique archer was. They rocked.

Civ2: The phalanx, clearly better value than any other battleship beating unit in any game
