Barbarians and level of play
I've heard that barbarian combat strengths vary by the level of play. That is: the same unit is stronger at diety and weaker at other levels. Can anyone here quantify just how much stronger and weaker by level? Somebody must have figured this out.

Gothmog, the Scenario League's design tips section has an article that reveals relative strengths of barbarian units according to difficulty settings.

Yo Exile. Long time no post. Where you been?

Gothmog - to save you the time and trouble, tbe barb attack strength varies considerably according to the difficulty level:

Chief - 25% (of normal)
Warlord - 50% (ditto)
Prince - 75% (ditto)
King - 100% (ditto)
Emperor - 125% (ditto)
Deity - 150% (ditto)

Thank you finbar! It's the first time I've seen that table. I seem to recall that the AI attack power at easier levels is reduced. Do you have a similar list?

NB - The Barb Archer only has a defence of 1. This allows horsemen to have easy kills during the early part of the game, when barbs are the greatest threat to your empire's progress.

Exile, Finbar,
Thanks. This is exactly what I wanted to know.

Glad I could help you for a change, Carl.

finbar, I've been around, just not on the OT. I have decided that the on-topic forums are where I wanna be. Friendlier environment.

I'm interested, for some strange reason, in getting in on one of your MP games, but have no experience whatever in doing that. I've got the time, however. Need someone new to destroy?

Salutations,

Important to note that it is only attack values that are enhanced.

So attack barbs, don't be attacked by them.

My experience is that even a humble warrior has a 50/50 chance to kill single hit point barbs (including archers because of SG's point) if he attacks. If he waits to be attacked, even entrenched and even with some terrain benefit he will die.

I've even, when desperate, tried attacking barb legions. Waste of time if they have any terrain benefits but you can get lucky on flat terrain - or drive them into the red so that a second unit can win.

It may very well be rubbish but for some reason I've had to attack with a phalanx three or four times in recent weeks and somehow it's my impression that the phalanx does just a tiny bit better than a warrior. Can't see any reason on earth why he should but my phalanx won each contest (by the narrowest of margins) whereas the one time I had to do the same with a warrior during the same spell he lost very badly. Please note I doubt that it can be worth one of our intrepid tester's time (unless they are very intrigued or I am missing the significance of the phalanxes defensive qualities when it is the aggressor) because I really can't see a basis for phalanxes being any better and it is so small a sample as to be meaningless really.

They are. Although Horse haunts the on-topic forums, too. Just a friendly warning.

Probably because we have a lot of fun. I'll add you to my ICQ list. We tend to play our nights, which might make things difficult.

I'll have a look. Off the top of my head, I recall that, on Chief level only, the attack strength of your units is doubled.
