Expansion idea - governments
I have an idea that I think would work for governments in the game, as well as individualizing the nations more. Depending on the nation, at the end of certain ages you would be presented with an option of two or three governments, each with their own bonuses and negatives. So, for example, the Germans would have such a choice when they got to the modern age- choosing between republic and fascism. The British would have one in the gunpowder age- choosing between monarchy and republic, for example. Each nation would have choices based on their own history.

The selection would only take a second, a la Age of Mythology.

Alternatively, there could be a generic selection like this at the end of each age, based on technology researched. So if you don't research "Constitution" before advancing an age, you can't choose a democracy, for example.

they already stated that government were not put in for simplicity, and also stated that they were pondering them for an XP.

wait a while, they'll speak

Yep this is an RTS. When u start adding more and more economic elements it detracts from the gameplay. Wonders are good enough.

If i wanted to mess around with the beaurocratic side of things i would play something like Civ3. RoN is good specifically because of its simplicity compared to such titles.

This suggestion is one of the main ideas behind Age of Mythology, and therefore is not new nor is it too complicated (since AoM is a fine game).

If governments were added, I'd be ecstatic.

Thought for the modders: Would it be possible to add new wonders/buildings as "governments?"

Say, A Monarchy builds a Castle, a democracy builds a Congress building, communism a Party Headquarters, etc, etc. Only one allowed per civ, and if you build the gov building, you get +/- in line with what that government would have. I'd be willing to help on the content side if anyone would be interested in trying this.

how would you go about this though? create a game script that destorys all government buildings when you build a new one?

whatif you capture one, and WANT to switch to it?

Go play AOM? If you don't want a strategic game, go play EE.

Krux- I'm not sure, my knowledge on modding is minimal.
I was thinking it over, and maybe gov's could take the form of research instead. Like I said, if someone wanted to take care of the actually script working, I'd be more than willing to offer what minimal modding/content help I have.

if it was research, and say you researched communism, and then later democracy, how could that work? hrm.

i suppose it would be possible to write a script that checks when a building is built (ie, a government building), and then goes and razes all former government buildings. would make for a cool looking "revolution" effect, especially if there were multiple government specific buildings.

it would also simulate a brief anarchy, if each building game you a bonus or something.

So, I guess the question would be- do you know how to write this script? Followed by: Would you be willing to work on a mod that allows this?

You could have a government add general bonuses to the entire nation, and then have some kind of "city hall" building that would add additional bonuses on a per city basis.

That way, you could implement it so that if you have a "city hall" in a city, it gives bonuses no matter what government you have (and a different look depending on the government), or you could implement it so that old buildings are destroyed when a new government is installed (or you take over an enemy city, modeling the installation of your government). Perhaps, in this case, a wonder could be used to make old city halls automatically change to new ones.

Lots of different ways you could do it.
