That's just the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Dutroux is their own Kennedy/Lee Harvey Oswald affair.

Agreed. He is just a serial killer wacko like we have over here. He must have been caused by Coca-colonization.

I am not interested enough in the story to know it, but the many problems during the trial seem to show he was linked to the well-connected maffia. At least that's what my hearsay is saying.

Hearsay is just that, hearsay. Most of such theories came from De Morgen or the Humo, and they've seriously erred in such conspiracy theory reporting in the past. Recall the false allegations against Elio Di Rupo or the fantasies of Regina Louf they fell into.
And you can have problematic cases without mafia involvement too.

If they chose to be killed by firing squad, then how could that count as cruel and unusual punishment? That would be like me vomiting all over myself when I get a speeding ticket, and then suing the ticketing officer for cruelly and unusually causing me to vomit at his hideous visage. It's not his bloody fault that he was born ugly...

I would let them pick from an entire field of choices:

lethal injection
firing squad
cyanide capsule
hanging
decapitation
gas chamber
drowning
bullet to back of head
slow freezing
dipped in liquid nitrogen
desert exposure
immolation
dropped into pirahna/shark tank
dropped into acid/caustic tank
run over by tank
dropped from tall buiding onto concrete
dropped out back of aircraft into ocean
dropped into volcano
explosive decompresion
explosive compression
explosives
impaling
quartering

...oh there are sooooo many ways...

Can you tell I'm bored?

You left out Death by Oprah. That's how inmates refer to life without parole.
