The "Barren 'Burbs" Succession Game
The Barren Suburbs Succession Game

As threate promised, I've started another succession game, any and all are invited to join, up to about 10-12.

Settings: Deity, raging, MGE, gigamap.

Rules: Only one special rule. You may not build Settlers or Engineers. You may bribe them from the AI or acquire them from huts... but they may not be built for any reason! No timelimits to play... but please try to post your intention to play within 72 hours of the last person, or you may be skipped

We may win by conquest only (sorry, OCCers). We may NOT lose (I guess there is a second rule, after all ).

Otherwise, all the normal non-cheat exploits are permitted (e.g. blackclicking, hutfinding, shipchaining, Xinning, and excessive use of Spies are all allowed, but Caravan/Freight rehoming is not).

As I had to try a couple of restarts and check the map before finding a 'suitable' start position, I have uploaded the 4000 BC save, and I myself will play after a few others have had a turn.

We start with Alphabet. Good luck.

You're up, atomant... go ahead.

In the test game I played, it seemed that playing this like an OCC for a while would be a good approach... but then, there might be better strats out there, more suited to the map size.

OK, sounds good. I'm in.

(Sounds tougher to screw up with a nice, basic ruleset like this... )

Jrabbit and Bob_Smurf, you're in

Smash... are you a observer, or do you want in?

Yes, I figured a lot of NON units would be helpful... of course, until we found a city, nomads will be pretty unlikely. And once we found a city, barbs are an option.

Assuming the other games do in fact wrap up with just one more turn playing, I may be able to squeeze in time for this one. tenitively stick me in on the end of the list

Barren Burbs Blatantly Boring Birth
BC 4000: two none settlers, hut in vicinity. Choose to explore for three turns before founding city(s)…

BC 3950 Pop hut, get none chariot. Muhahahahahaha….. move chariot to explore, look for likely city sites.

BC3900 More exploring.

BC3850 Exploring

BC 3800 Exploring

BC 3750 See immediately above

BC 3700 Found first city of Boring Bastard with two specials in vacinty…. Other none settle continues to find suitable site, none chariot explores…

BC3650 Please refer BC 3750

3600 BB builds warrior, continues to build second warriors.. Warrior goes a wondering

BC 3550 Please refer BC 3750

BC5500 Ditto immediately above.

BC 3450 Chariot finds hut on polar ice pack, poping reveals a measley 25 pieces of gold…. Third warrior

BC 3400 Explores, thinks, perhaps the next leader should consider researching Chainsaws so we can chop down these freaking trees.

BC 3350 Explores. Buys axe. Hates trees.

BC 3300 More evil trees.

BC 3250 Thinks has anyone got a chip monk or beaver…..

BC3200 Explores some more.

BC3150 Build second city of Freaky Finds, did consider building to make a canal, but is to close to Boring Bastard. Tech choices pop up, pick Ceremonial Burial, could have picked virtually any other tech…..

BC 3100 Exploring warrior finds hut. Pops to reveal another tribe of friendly mercenaries (chariot) supported from BB, which means BB is supporting four units with three gold, and one more Warrior in construction.

BC3050 Explores and stops play for next victim.

I expect a merciless analysis of actions from the Rabbit and all and sundry.

11 extra work hours so far this week (above my normal 50). If this keeps up (which I wouldn't mind ) I won't be in on this one.

Pft! No Gits, and no Straybow... is this still technically a succession game?

Old'n'slow, jump in if you like... otherwise we will await the return of the Rabbit...

-3000 we are #1 in nine categories (6th in Pop, but what the hey?) Meanwhile we have a few units out wandering, so we move them along.

-2950 -- Hut = 50g

-2900 -- Switch the building to Barracks (only white choice) hut = horse (supported)

(put the second citizen in the water for SOME science)

-2650 -- Discover CB, opt for Code

-2500 -- Hut = WC (yes we'll risk the off techs -- we're looking for a Nomad; once we get one, we'll want to rush him back to develop property)

-2400 -- Hut = Legion; Hut = Horse (both supported; probably all the hut units will be supported this close to home)

-2300 -- Hut = Barb (just a horse -- we smack him & our horse goes deep into the red zone)

-2050 -- (We're #4 in happy) -- Hut = Legion; Hut = 50g

-2000 -- We're 5th in Pop. Have two size two cities, 12 units, and many, many great city sites.

Next player may want to switch those barracks to temples -- but since all of the shields are spoken for, it may not be a big deal in the short run.

OK STYOM ... count me in!

It's been a busy time recently and my civ time has been devoted to Rather Late Landing Games

Leo's seems important for NON Settlers to upgrade.

SG(2), glad you could make it

There's a window of opportunity for you to play, since Jrabbit is AWoL until Monday. Jump in if you like.

I would say Leos is a priority for sure - but before that, Map Making, so that our explorers can pop those nomad-and-tribe friendly huts on other continents

And let's hope that our pack of NON units finds some AI cities to pillage, if they don't find any nomads.

Writing should be a priority as well. If we can't find nomads, we can buy someone else's

Usually cheaper to buy the city with the settler in an adjacent square

Will play Sunday.

[robust criticism]Yuk! - what an awful capital - built on a forest so no trade arrow is gained from the central tile. Notes that we have chosen not to build the Palace on the four special site at 164,12 and have both cities out of reach of the available whales. In Despotism Whales must be used to speed the progress to Monarchy.[/robust criticism]

2000 - Change Barracks production in both cities to Temples and disband some Warriors to ease shield support.
1950 Code of Laws; Freaky Finds builds Temple
1900 Hut sighted.
1850 Hut 100 Gold but not a Nomad
1800 Hut Advanced Tribe - Rhodes
1650 Hut - Barb
1550 Hut - Nomad
1500 Hut - Writing a good tech to have but puts the quest for Monarchy further away.
1400 Nomad founds Free Parking
1350 Pop 100,000; Hut - Nomad
1300 Freaky Finds builds Library - desperate to speed research for Monarchy; Cul-de-Sac founded.
1200 Rhodes builds Temple
1150 Monarchy; Boring Bastard builds Temple
1050 Revolution to Monarchy; Hut - Barbs

Notes for next player
Without the option to produce settlers the usual pattern for city build orders is very different. Because of this I chose more white goods than normal, sometimes using Temples for city happiness over martial law because of a chronic shield support situation in Despotism - aggrevated by units from huts.
Map Making is the next research target which could mean that some of the current build orders become Triremes.
Population 140,000
Treasury 107 gold

Looks good, (2). 3 more cities! This is starting to look like ICS... a strange ICS, without settlers

Jrabbit... you're on, following SG(2).
