Just to correct my post a little, seems that i've made some typos. *too. "worked without a hitch" not w/ a hitch. Just want to add that once RON was working, it was a hecka sweet game. Logged more than 20 hours on the game so far and it kicked ass! Too bad that so many other people can't enjoy it because of the graphic issues.

Bobadoe's Friend #2: Wow your computers blow, thats why you get shitty FPS(40-60 is gay). I get at LEAST 120 with my 3.06 gighrtz GF FX(yes, the 5900 ultra) with 2 gigs of DDR 400 RAM. All overclocked of course... with water cooling... So its actually around a 4 gigahrtz. I get SOLID frames. at 1600x1200x32 with max settings 16xAA etc etc... I have no idea wtf you guys are talking about.,. this game runs soo smoothly and is great! You guys should just go buy a new comp or kill yourself. No point in playing if its less than 80 frames.

Back!

Finals are, for the most part, over. Therefore, that means more RoN - if my framerate will let me.

Remember when I said I'd get 20 fixed? Well that's not right. You see, I was just playing and I was getting 6. Good old 6. I even took a screenshot, so if you wanna see you can ask. It says 6. Actually it was fluctuating between 5 and 6 but yeah, same thing.

Anyway, I was Classical Age and, admittedly, I had a pretty nice army (pop was about 100) but the enemy had, almost literally, nothing. The framerate was still 5/6. Yay.

I ran that program I was instructed to run, but all that did was reaffirm that my comp shouldn't be having any issues. No alarms went off, and it clocks my system settings at the same I listed before. I logged all that it would let me log and then ran RoN. Once there was framerate issues I logged 30 seconds of it and then checked. There were no changes in anything really.

What the hell?

Anymore ideas?

After reading these "problem" threads, I'm afraid to open the box. Rather, I should run not walk to return the game. If it does run right out of the box, I'd be sunk. All this talk of loading and unloading video drivers, etc makes my head swim.
--> update: game works fine. Now, my head swims from all the units on the map!

playshogi,

Best thing to do is download the demo from Microsoft's site. See if it will run!

If it does run, play the demo for a at least a few days and see if you are happy with the game's performance on your system. Keep in mind that the retail version will run just a trifle slower because of the music.

The demo is excellent with a "Quick Learn" and four fixed maps and four civs. The demo comes without music, but there are sound effects and appropriate bars of event marker music, it is not unpleasant.

No, it's a great game playshogi. Get it, definately, and even if it works like crap (like mine) it's still worth it IMHO.

Anyway, any ideas? jbestimt, ya there?

PTM,
Sorry for the delay in response. We're still working on repro-ing systems with lockups/slowdowns and haven't had much success in getting a repro case.
Still hunting,

Somebody from BHG PMed me for system specs or something but I...uhm...deleted it on accident. Whoever sent that it'd be nice if you could send it again.

Also, I wiped my drive but it didn't seem to have an affect (ie there's no spyware or background programs that might cause slowdown unless they are directly related to windows).

Some days, I can play with little slow downs...play for hours with only 1 or 2 second lockups occasionally.
OTHER days, every ten minutes I have 2 or 3 1-3 minute total lockups, where the frame rate hits 0 or 1...........

I have windows 98, an anthalon procesor, nvidia geoforce 3, tons of memory, a descent amount of hard-drive space, and a cable modem(the lockups are FPS related, but thought it worth mentioning).

I set all the visual things to "low" in game.... any idea why it only happens sometimes, and not others, and how to have it NEVER happen.

I have a similar problem. I have an AMD 2600, 1GB Corsair 3500 RAM, GeForce 3, Asus A7N8X Deluxe with onboard sound. I have the newest drivers for my video card and motherboard. I get 25 fps at 1280x1024 with render elements on high for most of the game and mid teens at the end in big battles. People I've seen with similar systems get 3-4 times my FPS. It's playable but I should be getting much higher FPS. All the Sandra tests rate my computer as being slightly faster than it actually is.

I overclocked my GeForce 3, I raised the core clock 25% and the memory clock 45% and got a 40% boost in framerates. I'm guessing its a video memory bandwidth issue with the nvidia cards.

I don't think so because my friend has a GeForce 4 and it runs fine.

...bump...

(...sorry...after 2 months the problem persists and I stopped playing through the whole of July because of it; now, after playing Nukezone, an online military sim and watching Band of Brothers on DVD I got an urge to play again. But the urge is dying with the persistant framerate problems...)

...yeah I was looking more along the lines of help that is worthwhile.

No game ever has caused me slowdown of this magnitude. Warcraft 3, for instance, which is just as, if not more so, graphically demanding as/than RoN, runs perfectly at all settings maxed.

So every game demands resources that my chip can amply provide except RoN? I don't think that is the case.

Motherboard and AGP updates -
1. ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-suppo...nfinst_enu.exe
With the above update this should identify your AGP bus and Chipset with Windows 2000.

Mr. Coleman from BGH told me to do this. It was the one thing I hadn't done, and lo and behold it solved my issue! After so many months...finally I can begin to say "wow RoN really is a great game!" - words I should have been saying all along.

However, that link is specified for my computer. I'm not sure if it'll work for anyone. The main point here is, "PROBLEM SOLVED!"

To the person who made this topic and all those who are having a similiar problem:

I am running into the same exact problem. A friend and I have very similiar computers and yet his runs the game at 80FPS from the get go.

My copy of rise of nations doesn't even display the MENUs smoothly. And when the game starts I get 12-15FPS whether the details are on low or on high. It makes no difference whatsoever. This isn't even in a battle.

So what did I do? I researched around on the internet. It seems most people just think our computers suck- but this isn't the case. In every case the person has been running some form of a GEFORCE card. I have a ti440 I think. And everyone on this forum and any other forum who has had extremely low FPS has a GeForce.

My system specs are:

AMD ATHLON 2200
GeForce Ti440 64MB
896MB DDR SDRAM
Sound Blaster Audigy X-Gamer

as soon as the game starts- 12-15 FPS held throughout the game.

My friend rig which is in the same room:

AMD ATHLON 2200
Radeon 8500 128MB
512MB DDR SDRAM
Sound blaster Audigy X-Gamer

80 FPS at startup- cooling down to a NICE 40 FPS during battles... oh and it's at 20 FPS now with 10 nukes being deployed at the same time... oh wait now its up to 80 FPS, after the nukes blew up.

As you can see- my rig should pimp his out... the only think is the Nvidia graphics card. Other than that- I have more RAM and the same processor and Sound card....

BTW- I get awesome Framerates on every other game. This game just doesn't like GeForce 4's and stuff.

Cry.

Seems like you're right sentience
I got an older machine (Athlon 1800) with a geforce2 mx400 (64 MB) and RoN runs pretty smoothly with most settings maxed even on that machine. It seems like it's the GeForce 4 series that presents problems

Well I was having performance issues, like 2-3fps, and thought it was a bit odd, but dismissed it as being crappy coding... but after a few dozens games I decided to look at the forums. Found this thread, found this

My Motherboard is Via AMD rather than Intel, so I downloaded and applied the latest Via 4in1 drivers (which do much the same thing). worked a charm, now my FPS barely ever falls below 30.
