AI Resourcegathering fault?
I had a game once where me and the iroquois had a deal over iron.
They had none and I sold them one of mine for quite a sum.

Then we started war with the egyptians and took some of their cities. Unfortunately (for me) the iroquois captured a city with iron in its city radius. Luckily I have pillaged that tile before so it was not connected.
I also had a unit standing there, that I removed after some turns after the AI captured the city.

Now our iron deal ended and they still wanted to continue it. They did not even think of building a road to the iron resource they just acquired.
That went on for quite a time and in the end I am not sure if they built one or not.

Is this a single case or is the AI not looking to gather resources on their own? Especially with such a high-priced deal like they had with me.

I think the standard behaviour should be to try to trade any missing strategic resources and try to acquire them by self as soon as possible. With the achievement of the later, the former becomes obsolete anyway.

I haven't seen this in any of my games, but I did a similar move once: after oil appeared, I realised I had 3 of the world's 5 oil sources, with India having the other 2. I didn't connect to my own oil because I had just been served a string of very bad numbers by the RNG: in most of the past games, any new resource I was connecting to was disappearing within 10 turns and reappearing deep in Ai territory. So in this game I decided to save my oil supply and import it. I had a lot of extra luxuries and I traded 2 or 3 of those to India for oil. Gandhi (sp?) was too happy to accept it, as he had just decided to join the little world war I had started a few turns before.

Edit: can't spell

Atahualpa , which version of Civ 3 is this? 1.21f ? 1.29f?

Is this PTW?

Edit: In a Debug (PTW god mode) I've seen AI trade for a resource, and once it captured a city, it went ahead and hooked up the resource and the trade expired.

The problem you mentioned is not the first time I've heard of it and may still be around.

Perhaps someone can run sum tests with the PTW debug mode and see what happens.

Hmmm ok thanks.

Atahaulpa, you can use the scenario editor right?

I suggest this test, and I suggest people who are interested do it.

Make three islands. One is yours one is AI.

Island 1)Your island will have 2 of each resource.
Island 2) AI will have no resource.
Island 3) Your island too, 1 of each resource. Also place an Explorer unit on this Island on a mountain, so you can see what the AI will do once you give the cities away.

I suggest you pick iron, coal, and maybe 2 luxuries to test as your resources.

I can't remember if you can place cities in Civ III editor, if you can't, just place settlers on the island and you can do the settling yourself.

First, start by setting your cities.

Connect the resources on Island 1, not Island 3

Make contact with AI. Wait until it builds a habour (should be quick if he's on an island).

Trade with him.

Give him your island.

See if he hooks up the resources.

Cheers. I'll give this a test when I find some time. But I'm busy with my Finance readings (damn professors).
