Yeah, in 2x prod games gems work better because there's usually SOME forest close enough for the production side. It just won't grow fast, but the early trade can make it worth it.

i like finding gold in x2 games...of course the usual suspects like whales and silk are great....

give me a pheasant and buffalo/peat/iron etc and i can crank settlers fast enough to find trade specials

But they work so much better in Monarchy.

u could say that about any special if you dont' get trade and your opponent does, it can be trouble, but with the right specials you can easily compensate so long as you don't get monarchy in 2250 and he got it in 3250

That's what I was talking about. But maybe not that extreme of a difference. But even 400/600 years is big.

400 or 600 years is HUGE. You can crank out so many more settlers in that time, allowing you to expand exponentially faster than your opponent... makeing it very difficult for him to catch up to you later.

One would have thought after more than 50 years you would have passed the need to argue over whose is bigger.

Threadjackers! What do you think this is, the MP forum?

I'm changing my vote to whales/gold/buffalo, in protest.

Agreed - in Despotism you only lose one trade arrow, whilst the extra shields and food help build settlers for expansion - assisting the early rush to Monarchy.

The other day I started on the 0 coordinate on a river. I was able to start two cities on the river that both could use the same whale. Sweet.

Whales, hands down (SP 1x). In addition to early trade and contribution to all needed areas (food, arrows, shields), it can't be hijacked by encroaching barbs etc.

Whales. Instant bang for the buck.

The other ones seem to require a little leg work to get going.

Whenever I do that, I usually just find more pheasants, peat, iron and buffalos.

Sounds like you are stuck in a "band" of all the same type (fish-special under the land). Bands run east-west, so go north or south 6-10 tiles and you will get into another "band", which should be of the opposite type (whale-special).

Yeah, when fish is the best I can do as a trade special, it's going to be a long night. Especially if you're listening to someone talk about all the gold, wine, silk, and whales that they just uncovered. HINT HINT.

SILK is best! What's the matter with you morons?
Whales are cool, and of course Gold is uh… golden. They get my vote, too; but all roads lead to silk, as it were. Silk is what you're looking for if you mine a grasslands looking for hidden specials. Wheat is only good for mining into Silk.

Wine, Oasis, Ivory & Spice are too rare to count as favorites—excellent if they can be placed in a city radius. Pheasant/Buffalo and the shield specials are marginally worth locating for, but anything else is subordinate if a good site places the special outside the radius.

I started an MP game the other night and had TWO rivered silk in the opening screen. Two cities down quickly. My first searching warriors found two more silks only a few squares away. All four of my first cities were built on silk. Made for a very nice game.

No, I can actually say that I didn't even use my typical *sigh*, I even got a free city reasonably early followed by a nomad. I didn't want to say a word. I was also on one side of the world why the other two shared the other side. Kept under the radar, and kicked butt in terms of growth techs and trade.

Not really, silk had 9 and gold had 10. In a poll this size, I would say that's not significantly different.
So your attempt to state the obvious and get a free +1 failed. But why am I not surprised.
