PreFabricated Settlement

Volume Two - Dtrategic Guide to PreFabricated Settlement
(Part of the ongoing Dtrategy Series from the Glory of War)

This concept arose out of my desire to be able to compete for Ancient Age Wonders with the AI at Diety level. The goal was to free up a Wonder production city while still producing units to expand and settle and to do so as quickly as possible.

This is the procedure I developed to quickly farm off a city or two and not lose any tile usage while doing so. It requires the construction of roads up to and including the next city site. Once you have chose the site and have been able to complete the settler. It move two tiles on the prebuilt road and then uses its remaining third of a movement point to settle the new city.

The turn you lose the use of the two pop in the city that built the Settler (the loss of production from two tiles) is the same turn you found the new city and gain the production of the city tile and the tile its pop is working (gain production from two tiles) which thus counteract one another.

GH, I'm not really sure I understand what you are trying to convye here.

Spending Worker road time to allow the Settler to settle in one move?

/me thinks the Strat guys need to re-establish control of this forum from the dastardly and *confusing* GoW infidels!!

I was thinking the same thing. Why use the worker's turns roading a city site?? That time would certainly be better spent somewhere else.

Continuing with my "Food fetish", I would have irrigated the Cattle near the capital instead of mined it. If you have the time, I suggest you try this approach and report the results. In all "tests" I've run for PBEM games and the like, I've always found that prioritizing Food is the key to a strong start. I would like to see evidence to the contrary.

The reason the Worker puts a Road on the future city-site is that the Settler can found a city the turn that it is produced, which is certainly advantageous. Whether it is better to do this than not waste 2 or 3 Worker-turns on a Road is up for debate.

Personally I would have founded a city somewhere in the jungle adjacent to the Cattle, in order to clear a Jungle tile "for free". I'm aware, however, that this commits me to a 3-tile spacing from the capital.

Yes, that's it.

To build the road cost you 3 turns of a Worker's use if your Industrious. You gain one turn of a new city, or the utilization of two tiles. Typically for a grassland and shieded grassland that would be a one time return of 4 food, 2 shields and 1 commerce. Whereas chopping down a forest rresults in a one time return of 10 shields. I'm not saying its a game winning strategy that will kill you for not doing it, but it gives you a little boost in the settlement race a makes a dramatic difference on Diety level in SP versus the AI in competition for Ancient era Wonders.
