I'm off to Australia
Anyone got any tips for places to visit in Melbourne, Australia? How bout the rest of Australia?

I'm off there in two weeks. Should be able to visit Sidney and say hello to all those Ausssie posters out there, like Skanky Burns.

Will be there for several months hopefully, got my working holiday visa today, woohoo!

Have a great time Big Crunch!

Can't think of any places to visit off hand - but I reckon with 7 months you'll have plenty of time to find out for yourself.

(I mean, apart from the obvious - Sydney Opera House, Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef etc etc).

Now that I have sobered up a bit could a mod change the title to "I'm off to Australia". Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

Opera House is nice, but come on, you have to go to the wild places to really be blown away from Australia's true beauty.

The wide open deserts and canyons are breath taking.

The opera house is just for show

BC.
Melbourne is good for:
- Beaches (head west 2 hrs and hit Great Ocean Road), both bay and surf varieties.
- Good cheap food (let me know your preferences and I'll try to advise)
- Botanic Gardens (next to city) is a beautiful park to visit.
- Can cruise wineries if into that sort of thing.
- As for the live music and dance scenes, there are some, but I'm to old/family-man-ish to be up to date on that.
- A good city for riding, blading, water sports. I would get a bike and live near the city if you want to live cheaply.
- I suppose you should go to Aussie Rules football matches while you are here as that is the closest that we have to a culture here. Best matches for seeing scary fans in action would be Melbourne matches between Collingwood and another old Melbourne team (Carlton, perhaps).
