Interesting concept. At least the games are fast.

The game can be as fast or slow as you like - the settings are infinitely variable.

One cool setting feature I found was you can set the game to have a tech tree that only goes up to a certain period, like the ancient age or medieval. The tech tree is still there but it gets filled out with new stuff to research instead of just dashing to the modern age.

So if you want to just play an ancients game or a gunpowder age game, you can.

I also noticed the special abilities of nations are optional in the settings so for MP you can switch them off and everyone gets units with the same capabilities i.e. a level playing field.

It happens to many.............RTS just doesn't suck as hard as it used to these days. For me it was WC3.........I played it because I was bored, and to my surprise actually enjoyed it.

Btw Frozen Throne > RoN.

I haven't made up my mind about RoN yet - but I am enjoying playing it.

Haven't tried RoN, but I have been playing the hell out of Hearts of Iron, which is also in the "new" breed of RTS.

The nifty thing about HOI is that it plays almost exactly like a TBS, it just uses the running clock as a mechanism for timing offensives and attacks.

Anyone else played this?

I've been sorely tempted to buy HoI and probably will - looks good.

I suspect its an update of a game called Third Reich which also had a novel approach to the tbs/rts issue - battle was in real time.

real time strategy - the game plays simult.

I've given HoI a miss so far for a couple of reasons. Firstly I'm pretty happy with RoN and can wait. Secondly I was a bit worried the production side of the game might be a bit laborious.

The production isn't TOO terrible, but there is some micro-managing involved that can get tedious.

The tech tree is so gigantic that IT can sometime overwhelm you, with so many interlocking techs for so many things, rushing towards a goal really isn't possible.

It's well worth it though, and the AI is good enough to present a decent challenge.

Three posts in a row,

Desperation?

RAH

Waiting for the same feeble, "I don't know how to do it in one post" that Hydey used in another thread recently.

The beauty of the game is that it takes all of the good RTS qualities (Timing of attacks, element of suprise, not enough time to get things done) with all the elements of great board and computer games (multiple units, technology race, intuitive AI, large scale combat formations with land, sea and air all taking part).

It one of the best games to come out in years, and the MP actually works...

Yes, modding that forum has forced me to read more about the game (and any complaints) then I would normally have chosen too. After watching the all the Bi****** that was done in the CIV and MOO III forums, I was pleasantly surprised to see how little there is for this game. It speaks highly about it's funtionality.
