Huh?? Even the 32-bit Windows allows 2GB RAM/2GB virtual per process.

panag, you seriously don't have a clue what you're talking about. Stop trying.

Asher, no one uses computers for Photoshop, or at least no one needs excessive speed for it. I will come out and say it: who gives a crap about pictures and image editing. Faster processors are a waste of my time. Macs are really good for stability, coolness without having to pay extra for a nice third party case, and uh - plug and play, essentially painless airport wireless. You cannot beat that.

And btw macs have 512 cache and you only have a 3 cache - case closed.

panag, since you apparently can't even figure out how to click links, I took the liberty of taking a screenshot and highlighting the important part:

Wiglaf:
Apple's been behind in that department, too. Intel's been on 512KB for the desktop chips for a LONG time, and a month after the G5 comes out, both AMD and Intel are using 1024KB L2 cache.

Jesus Christ man, where do you get 6GB of RAM?

The article clearly says that particular model can address 24GB, which is limited only because of the physical space inside the chassis.

Have you been right about anything?

Define fastest, Asher. IBM just put out scores for one of their 32 core Power4 machines beat the 64 processor Itanium II.

It's all going to come down to what you're trying to do, what code you've already got, and what resources you have to spend on new code.

--" I fail to see any serious competition beside AMD's Opteron."

Different markets. Opteron is going to do a lot to keep the Itanium out of the workstation space, but they're mostly targeted for different areas of the server market.
Although IBMs cluster-focused rack-mount Opteron server might help push it up there.

--" but the Opteron can only work in systems with up to 8 CPU"

Oh, Asher, you know better than that. It can work in up to 8-way configurations without extra glue logic. Your precious Itanium needs the extra glue logic if you want to do more than one processor at a time. There are already 32-way Opteron servers announced, and they are going to scale far better than the Xeon line (and even the Itaniums).

--"they're small-time Texas companies). "

Like IBM, you mean?

--"Opteron also can only address 16GB of data"

You're wrong about that one, actually. There's a difference between what the Opteron can address and what current memory modules can provide on current motherboards. The CPU itself can address 4.5TB of physical memory.

--"Asher, no one uses computers for Photoshop, or at least no one needs excessive speed for it."

Well, I don't use Photoshop, but I'd never pass up more CPU power to put behind the batch image editing processes I do run with The Gimp...

So it's rather convenient, then, that all the motherboards chose 16GB as a limit?

What's the address bits on the Opteron? 42?

People don't buy these babies on the shelves. They're for professionals, G5s are for inept Mac users.

That was years ago, and it was because the Apple marketing department unearthed an ancient law which stated any computer faster than 1 Gigaflop had to have export regulations on it.

Nevermind that PC chips exceeded that limit long ago, nobody cared.

And no regulations were ever imposed, the law was simply updated (1 Teraflop, IIRC?)

"So why buy the G5 if the G4 plays Max Payne?"

Half-Life 2.

BTW - do some fact checking. 10.3 isn't out yet, and won't be out until after the G5 comes out - it is going to be 64 bit.

Apple would've mentioned it if it was. Comon, you know Apple. "World's first 64-bit desktop operating system!!!"

The general consensus is the 64-bit version isn't ready. Which isn't a surprise, it's not like you flick a switch and it's 64-bit...

They'll probably call the 64-bit version OS 11 or something. 32-bit to 64-bit move is big, not worthy of a .1 upgrade.

I don't think either of us can say for certain. What I just said is what the mac community thinks is coming. We've dealt more and for a longer period of time with apple than you have, and trust us, we DO take what apple says with a grain of salt.

Could you explain to me what L3 cache is, btw?

Sure.

The CPUs these days work by fetching data from memory, then working on them.

By far, the fastest (instantaneous) access is in system registers. There's a limited number of these on each chip, the data is moved from memory (RAM, HD) into these registers and operated on, and the result is stored in another register.

But chips have things called a cache that usually sits on the CPU, or really close to it, to put stuff it uses a lot. The idea is by moving things much closer to the chip, with much more bandwidth, it can get it far faster (hundreds of thousands times faster, even).

There are up to 3 levels of cache usually: L1, L2, and L3.

L1 is Level 1, it's very very very fast, but also very small (32KB or so).
L2 is Level 2, it's very very fast, but moderately small (512KB is the norm today, PCs are moving to 1024KB in September)
L3 is Level 3, and is almost always found only in servers. Apple kinda cheated, they put regular DDR SDRAM near the chip and called it L3. While technically correct, it's not very fast. Chips like the Itanium II have this L3 cache physically built into the chip, and it's far faster.

If the data the CPU is looking for isn't in the L1, L2, or L3 caches, it goes to the RAM. There's a HUGE delay pentalty to do this.

And if it's not in the RAM, it tries the virtual memory on the harddrive. Literally millions of times slower than a cache.
