Whew!!

After rereading my last post, I realised that we ought to change the name of the topic to "Who wants some free therapy?"

It's really great talking to you guys. It's really hard for me to talk to anyone, especially guys. Pretty funny, considering I never really worked with any girls in the gaming industry. Especially designers. The few I've heard of have often only gotten the jobs by dating (or fvcking) someone higher up in the industry food chain (i.e. Stevie Case, Roberta Williams, Carin Yew, etc.), or by somehow taking all their clothes off.

Considering that a great deal of my work wardrobe consists of t-shirts I get for free at trade shows, and nights sleeping under my desk notwithstanding, I honestly can't see the appeal.

I hate pizza. I used to love it, but since it's cheap, you eat a lot of it during crunches (and that's not an exercise, that's when the team collectively realises that they're hideously behind schedule and begins scrambling to fit 10lbs. of sh*t into a 5lb. bag).

I used to think that my ideal mate would be someone like Tristram (if I were Issaulde), but then I realised that just because someone is willing to chase doesn't mean you have to keep running.

Nowadays, I think a perfect date would be seeing a live Robin Williams show at a really, really small venue (fat fvcking chance, right?) with my bros. Josh and Brian, since neither of them will be expecting me to 'put out' (a quaint American slang term denoting a girl's tacit 'obligation' to fvck any guy who buys her a Happy Meal).

I'm so sick of being asked if I'm a lesbian. How many times do I have to say it: You're only a lesbian if you come from the isle of Lesbos (just ask Michael Chiklis). Turning a guy down for a date does NOT make you a lesbian, no matter how rich, important, or handsome a dude can be. It just makes you selective, and assured of your own judgement.

Honestly, I think the Apolytoners know more about me than anyone, even my family. I haven't talked about my REAL family to anyone, not even the shrinks who insisted that I would feel better if I just told them everything. I always thought that they only felt better when I paid for my sessions on time.

I have SEVERE insomnia, which is compounded by a bad overreaction to any sort of stress. I HATE loud noises, people who make noise to try to get your attention rather than just asking for it. The one thing I remember clearly about my mom is that she always spoke bluntly (i.e. NO tact whatsoever) and was always brutally (even painfully) honest, and that's something I rarely see in people these days.

I pretty much split everyone into two types of people: those who can tell the difference between metal and silicate just by touching it, and those who can't. There's a reason, you know: like calls to like.

I like to think that my dad is now the Mayor of San Francisco, doing all the stuff he always dreamed of doing.

St_Swithin's top [10] array:

0) Argue not about the cards you are dealt in Texas Hold'em, or in life.

1) All 5 senses are useless without belief to hold them together.

2) Moore's Law only applies while the limits of materials sciences have not yet been reached.

3) Do unto others - i.e. if you're a Jehovah's Witness, don't knock on the Jewish neighbours' door asking if they've found Jesus at 6am, and then don't get pissed off if they slam the door in your face.

4) Never go straight, only FORWARD.

5) Regret the things you have not yet done, and don't dwell on the things that you have done.

6) Don't stop asking WHY until you get a satisfactory response.

7) It's not in the answers, btw, it's in the QUESTION.

8) It's not what you ask, but how you ask it, and when, and where, and why and how.

9) The truth ALWAYS hurts, but it's the only thing that can set you FREE.

Note: my arrays always start with [0]. I HATE scripting languages that reinforce the probability of an off-by-one error.

Glad to meet a programmer. One question. What is Moore's Law?

Name: John (I’m the fourth generations in my family to have the same first, middle, and last name).
Residence: For the last four months I’ve been living in Sacramento, CA and originally I planned to move back to San Diego once I had one year’s experience at my current job, but, I’m being seduced by the really cheap cost of housing (not to mention this is the fastest appreciating housing market in the US) and my desire to buy a house. Before this I’ve lived to San Diego for 21 years (all my family still lives there), Santa Barbara for 4 years, and in Europe for 8 months.
Age: 27
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 195
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Light brown
Ethnic background: ½ Scottish, 3/8 English, and 1/8 French-Canadian.
Family: My parents are still married though my mother is currently dyeing of cancer. I have one older sister (who’s 29) who’s married with three kids. Both sets of my grandparents are dead (my maternal grandmother died before I was born, my maternal grandfather died of heart disease at the age of 73, my paternal grandfather died of Parkinson’s at the age of 85, and my paternal grandmother died of a heart attack at the age of 89) but I have numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and what nots; most of them live in California though I do have relatives in Scotland, England, Georgia, Michigan, and Australia.

Education: I have a B.S. in Geology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and I’m thinking very seriously about going back to school to get a M.S. in Geology or a MBA depending upon where I want to go with my career.
Religion: Non-practicing Protestant.
Politics: Officially a Centrist Democrat, but I tend to be an issue voter and I will cross party lines to vote for which ever candidate best fits my own special brand of politics. Mostly I am a free market capitalist who believes in government run social programs {I] where we can afford them[/I] and I am a fiscal conservative (meaning don’t borrow money and always balance the budget).
Romance stuff: I’m currently dating a girl who is one year my younger and who is half-Italian and half-Hawaiian. We’ve been dating for two months but I’m thinking seriously about ending it because we have different life goals and a tendency to quarrel over mundane things which really don’t matter.
Interests: Hiking, Backpacking, politics, history, piloting, travel, wine tasting, beer brewing, and writing. I’m getting to the point where I am serious about writing a book my current thought for a subject is the future of Nato or the history of Psychological warfare.

OT stands for off topic. I'm a beginning programmer and have not yet heard of Moore's law.

You don't have to know Moore's Law as a programmer, since all it actually mentions is the rate transistors double in processors every 18 months.

But a programmer should know that, since it tends to correspond to performance as well which is good to know. But it's not a necessity...

I stand corrected (re: Moore's), and I apologise for my pedantism.

Thanks for telling me what OT means!

And you know, I still consider myself a beginning programmer.

I've been mostly lurking but I'll do a quick write up.

Live in: Sweden, see flag, etc.
Age: 20
Height: 6 in. / 183 cm.
Weight: 177 lbs / 80 kg.
Eyes: Vary from steel grey to dark blue.
Hair: Born blond, now dark brown with a blond patch which comes and goes.

Family: Say it loud, working class and proud! A brother, parents divorced, small extended family but we're pretty close.
Education: HS with prospects. No degree in higher education yet, looking at languages and economics. Been thinking of medical school (brain surgeon, sounds good ) also.
Ambitions: Limitless. Er, I'm a slow starter, but always been great on the sprint.
Drugs: Only the legal and habitual: caffeine, alcohol and nicotine in smoke-filled rooms. Legalize the rest anyway.
Religion: Never an issue. I was raised irreligious in a secular Christian society and have yet to veer.
Politics: Leftie sympathies, rightie/libertarian policies. I'm convinced that socialism sacrifices the future for the present, only the present was 15-30 years ago so we're screwed now. Appreciate that lots, mom and dad! Coming to the inevitable US foreign policy, I hesitantly supported action in Afghanistan and Iraq, but I'm skeptical of the neocon/forever war agenda. Then, the UN badly needs clarification of its role and the EU ought to integrate economy but foreign policy not so much; CAP needs deconstructing.

Love & romance: I don't have a girl and I'm not at all romantic. (Don't tell me those are connected!)
Interests: Modern history (Vietnam is fascinating), languages, sports. And everything else. Used to be strategy games too (Civ, Colonization, EU2), but they don't seem to engage me for longer periods anymore.
Literature: The great late 20th C pomo (not porno) (anti-) novel, magical realism, 19th C Russian realism. Etc.
Music: Eclectic. Upbeat or unintrusive basically. Rhythm and repetition (r 'n r) over melody. Maybe I should be ashamed to admit it but, I like atonal music as well though've had only limited exposure to it.

st_swithin: Let me guess, you consider anyone who is still learning a beginner, right? I only consider people beginners if they have only started learning in the last year or so.

Kitschum: 6 in. does not convert to 183 cm. It converts to 15.24 cm. This is only place with a six-inch poster.

I'm pretty sure it's bull to make people feel better about themselves, because personally I've seen very few less than that and I live in an area full of white people and asian people (who supposedly have the smallest).

183cm= 6 feet. There are 12 inches to a foot so if you were 6" (not 6') tall then you'd be 15-16cm tall.

Yeah, I have that problem too. My hair was blond when I was born then it turned light brown when I was 10 and now it turns red when ever I'm in the sun for to long. Damn my Scottish genes.

how can people's hairs and eyes change colour from the sun? i've never seen that happen to anyone... skin yeah but hair and eyes?

Asher:

yeah i was kind of wondering about that... like imagine if they said the average was let's say 8 inches and how would people with 6 inches feel... yeah i guess it makes sense to make no man feel ineffective and most men feel hugely superior

I normally have brown hair but if I spend 5-7 hours a day out in the sun I'll turn into a blond.
