Anybody who has PTW has the coffee beans. Just play TeTurkhan's Test Of Time Mods. Also, about half of my PTW maps are based on his mods. Not only are there coffee beans that can be traded, but also tobacco, pearls, and exotic seafood (crabs). You can add extra resources without otherwise greatly changing the rules.

I like the idea of pearls as another sea resource. That makes sense. It would also make sense to be able to use a sea unit to go fishing or pearl harvesting on a resource that is outside of any city range.

Do you think tobacco is a 'politically correct' resource?

This 'Test of Time' mod you mentioned - is that like Civ 2 ToT? I really liked ToT scenarios, so if this mod is similar I will have to check it out.

Why not? Tobacco is legal. It was historically important. And no, I don't smoke. I don't care if things are PC in my PC either.

Well, it's not an entire add-on like Civ 2 ToT was. But it is a mod with sweeping changes. He has 31 civs, new units like the flamethrower, separate infantries for British, French, Germans, etc.; some cool leaderheads, etc. Do you have PTW?

I added a bunch of spices into my games in addition to to oh-so-descriptive "spices". Vanilla, cocoa, peppers, coffee, sugar, and tea, among others. One reason I did this was that spices were the driving force behind trade, more than anything else, and deserved more representation -- each of the items I listed are major trade items, from antiquity and into today.

Besides, most of them give people a reason to be happy about jungles...

I did, actually.

I made hops a strategic resource, then created a "famous brewery" small wonder to go with it.

Why a small wonder?

Because you can't make a building that requires the resource to be within the city limits.

Why would you eliminate a luxury? PTW removed the limits (at least, I haven't run into them yet).

I'd prefer coffee over incense and ivory...

I agree. I boosted all the resources, especially strategic, to make them much more worth fighting over.
