RPG Games and Editable Graphics
I bought Icewind Dale II last month because I knew it would be a decent game and more importantly knew that it allowed you to create your own portrait graphics for your characters.

I had no plans on buying NWN as I can't stand games that require you to turn over your checking account to them in order to play them online, however:

though I should mention NWN is free online.

And there isn't too much trouble with lag at all. Much better than civ3

The only difficult part is finding good games. Sometimes you get in games with powergamers that don't want to roleplay at all. There are sites like neverwinterconnections.com which will help you hook up with serious role players.

have made me consider purchasing NWN. My question is whether it allows you to have custom portraits or not.

And as a side note, should I upload the custom portraits I made somewhere or does anyone else use them?

I'm pretty sure that you can, but whatever server you're on also has to have the file, I think. I would check out nwn.bioware.com to see- it's got a lot of good resources on it

I enjoyed nwn online for a while, until I lost my character in a server crash. It's a matter of finding a good server, and there are plenty of persistent ones out there.

Yes you can have custom portaits.

And if you play with a group of players, they can see your portraits as well. But they have to download the portrait files to the portrait dirtectory in the nwn folder.

I'm not entirely sure how to make them. But I have downloaded other people's portraits.

Here's a link that may be useful. I did use this link to get the Jan portrait (from Baldur's Gate2) into one of my games.

Great, I am looking at either getting Morrowind or NWN and seeing at how there are a lot of people from the demogames that have NWN I am starting to lean in that direction.

Here are two of the portraits I made for Icewind Dale II, they are actually just quick shots I made of two of the characters I have built for the comic book I am working on.

Not really, setting the model and tweaking the body shape, clothes, accessories, etc. takes a while, but once I have the finished character I can create all new poses and facial expressions in just a couple of minutes.
