USA beats Old Europe in Geography
Quote:
Three U.S. teenagers won the gold medal Wednesday in the National Geographic World Championship, beating teams from Germany and France to successfully defend the U.S. title in a contest held every two years.

And Eurocoms always complain about USAers not knowing the world outside our own borders.

Das ist nicht sehr gut Deutschland.

This thread reminds me of Sava's "W eats a cake, that means he's a MORON!" -threads.

I can't believe that waste your time watching these 'news', yet alone making a thread from them. OTOH, This is another clear prove that CNN sucks.

A lot of this competition is luck. I lost at the middle school level to someone far less qualified. We had a round where they went around the room asking questions to about 40 people, eliminating on first wrong answer. On the test that was given to see who would qualify for the school-level competition, I'd gotten the highest in the school. Naturally, though I knew the answer to about 98% of those, on the second or third pass I got a question I didn't know the answer to. I had to sit through a final round between two contestants, where neither could answer any of the questions, thinking god... this is so obvious.

Cnn is not conservative.

Fox news is conservative.

I find CNN to be fairly balanced. Though I do agree their coverage has been declining in quality the past 5 years or so.

CNN is really conservative from a European viewpoint.

@ the geography team thing. Clear proof that the US is the greatest country in the world.

To be fair:

Quote:
Wednesday's questions, created by a team of National Geographic writers and teachers, were heavily based on the geography of Africa, southeast Asia and Pacific island nations. The competition specifically excluded questions about the finalists' home countries.
On the other hand, I used to subscribe to the National Geographic magazine and recall that every year they did a survey of schoolkid's geographical knowledge. It seems that it's now done internationally, here's the story about the latest one:

I guess its easier for most european people to travel abroad, since that is most of the time almost next to the door.

I admit I only traveled around in europe so far. So if the eurozone would become one big country, I would have not gone abroad too.

That said its kind of unfair to take into account how often someone has been "abroad".

I disagree. Australia and NewZealand are in the middle of no where in world terms (up **** creek to be more precise) but we are everywhere. You can go anywhere in the world and their will be some aussie already there.

Why are so many non-Americans using this article as a claim to America's status as a superpower? Why are they all so upset that anyone even mentioned it? Could it be that their many jokes about the American education are false? Have they lost their last bastion to overcome an inferiority complex? Will this lead to war?

That is because since they know they are in the middle of nowhere, they want to go to "where". Umm plus they are part of the sun-never-setting pink empire.

I think the reason Euros are beter at geography than americans is that the Euros travel between countries alot. Most working class americans never leave The US unless they live near the Canadian or Mexican borders. Also I think our schools concentrate to much on North American geography rather than world geography.

This is crap anyway. So what if the US team won. US citizens as a whole know less about the world than African tribesmen.

It's not traveling much....I've only been to a few countries, but I know more geography than the averege American. It's partly because I need to know and partly because I want to know. Most americans have neither of those. Therefore, they dont know.
