Civ III Basic - XP Problems
Okay, I've done a rough search of Apolyton and I'm still stuck. Maybe someone can direct me to right solution.

I just upgraded my computer to a P4 with Win-XP and I'm trying to get Civ III to work again.

Civ III Basic (no PTW) loads and boots fine. However the text gets all jumbled and the game crashes outright when I click on any of the main screen buttons

I've tried lowering my font count which worked when I had a Win98 machine, but it didn't work this time.

I tried changing the compatibility mode as well, but that didn't fix the fonts or crashes

I've tried the above fix-attempts with Civ III straight of the CD and with v1.29f upgrade. Neither shows changes.

Can someone point me to a solution?

Supposedly removing all fonts with Lucida Sans in their names will fix the font problem.

I have a P4 with Win XP and I can play both fine. I had a friend who had problems getting it to work and e-mailing infogrames tech support fixed his problem. Just make sure that when you e-mail them you are specific about your problem.

I just reloaded my hard drive from scratch with the full version of XP (from Win Me). Now when I start up Civ3 the screen warps to an hourglass shape. I could adjust it manually at the monitor controls but then I would have to adjust again after the game. I hope there's an easier solution out there. I have the latest drivers, DirectX 9.0b, and a GeForce 2 Ultra. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are not running at 1024 desktop, look at the readme for the KeepRes settings and try that. I presume youu are not running at 800.

I am at 1024x768. I checked again today and it mysteriously fixed itself. Strange.

Never upgrade an OS. Do a full and clean install. I have a setup sheet that is for XP Pro that shows a lot of the tweaks and settings. Email me if you would like a copy.

I did do a full clean install (immediately followed by patches and updates). On the software side, I got my other applications (and DSL connection) back up and running with little difficulty. On the hardware side however I'm still dealing with some imcompatibilities. Downloading updated drivers hasn't helped yet. Its a two year old Gateway and the Sound Blaster Live card is giving me the most problems (still no sound).

Yes, but they're not happy about me wiping their hard drive and installing my own stuff.
