I don't even know what to say about this... I mean, they were trying to rescue a woman from terrorists... so I really can't get very upset about that...

but they violated Brazilian sovereignty in trying... I don't know whether to be thrilled our boys caught them, or dismayed that she wasn't saved...

It appears that everyone here, from the FARC and the Colombians to the French and the Brazilians, suffered from a severe lack of communication (in other words: to a degree, they may all be a bunch of liars).

Do you guys remember that scene in Saving Private Ryan where they wouldn't tell that new guy what FUBAR meant?

Why didn't they simply carry out some secret talks with Brazil and Columbia to get her out. I can't imagine they would say no to a rescue mission from terrorists. Or would they?

Hmmm... Mirriam Webster has snafu, but not fubar.

Tassadar: You have to admit that this is particularly clumsy...

Their cover story was the worst I have ever heard. They could at least have tried to come up with something reasonable for why they would need a transport plane in the area on short notice. Then, they should have used this "emergency" to make urgent requests to Columbia or Brazil for flight permission and/or cooperation.

This wouldn't be the first time. Back in the good ol' times (the 1995's), the Justice minister was sacrificed by Chirac: one of Chirac many crookeries was investigated by a new judge, and the Justice minister sent an expedition to take back the old judge taking a vacation at the Himalayas

Chirac's blunders are the last hope of French humour

IIRC, French intelligence can get orders from the Defense and the Foreign minister (and I guess from the President as well). His decision was stupid, but I don't think it went further than Villepîn's abilities.

The funny thing is that the explanation of FUBAR is the only line said in English in the German (dubbed) version of Saving Private Ryan. AFAIK it was "F***ed up beyond all recognition", although it is quite a long time since I saw the movie

Well, they dub all movies (and tv stuff too) here - sometimes quite badly. Of course on DVD you can have several languages but in the cinema all movies (wirh some exceptions) are generally in German.

When in Vienna my class went to see an Italian movie based on the Gospel of Luke (from the 1950's, black and white, faithfull to the text), but of course dubbed...

Man, hearing Jesus make his big, rousing speeches in german was hillarious.

It is especially funny in some movies - eg. in Gladiator all spoke German - except the Germans in the beginning

In the German dub Taxi 1, everybody speaks German... And the German villains (who weren't dubbed) are the worst at it
