Messenger Service Popups
About 4 months ago, I started to get these popups while connected to the internet. Basically, a window pops up with a message. It appears to be part of XP, but isn't part of MS Messenger, as far as I can tell. No odd processes are started to give me a clue as to where it's coming from.
Of course, I want these killed ASAP, while still being able to surf (Mozilla) and swap files (eMule). This with a cable modem, always-on connection.
Anybody have a clue on what to set to stop this instrusion? I am trying ZoneAlarm, but it's confusing and doesn't seem to work sometimes. Then it costs after a certain time.

I don't believe so. It's just like a normal Windows pop-up with an "OK" button.

It just contains spam. Penis enlargement. Porn sites. Debt reduction. That sort of thing.

Hmmm, sounds dodgy...something has installed one of those dodgy ad programs that pop them up now and again. I'd try and purge it from your system...piece of sh*t...

We've had loads of threads on this.
It's nothing too sinister, it's just that for some daft reason NETSEND is activated by default in XP Home.
It's intended for network admins to send a message to everyone on the system, but it can be exploited by spammers.
There's a very easy way to disable it ... but I've forgotten how. No doubt someone else will be along to explain it later.

Message from Glonkybabes:
Tell DanS to go to Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services, and right click "Messenger", go to Properties. Then hit Stop and select "Disabled" from the dropdown

Try a different firewall as well; I switched from ZoneAlarm to Sygate when I did my WinXP install. Sygate doesn't badger you about updates or have shareware nags the way ZoneAlarm does, and I like its logging features better.

Asher is my hero! I've been looking all over for how to get rid of that stupid problem.

Funny. Last time I went to the Lindows home page it tried to install Gator on my machine.
Of course Linux solves every computer problem known to man.

You should watch the OT more closely then. It's been mentioned at least twice in the last couple of months.

Well, it's a good thing I didn't buy that "messenger killer" app that they tried to sell me on one of those messenger popups:
