Where can I get obsolete computer hardware?
I'm trying to get a primitive colour scanner. i don't want to pay more than 30 dollars or so.

I'm also trying to get a 8 mb video card.

is there some kind of internet site or something that specializes in obsolete hardware?

thanks

I just inherited a P90 computer. It's all yours if you want it.

btw, scanners and 8mb video cards aren't exactly obsolete.

I have some old hardware but not a scanner. I'll sell you a Diamond Viper 770d video card for cheap if you want it. It's 32MB.

yeah Dissident... they are obsolete... i asked the employees at staples, circuit city, and best buy and they said the lowest mb video cards they sell are 32 mb and they are about to phase those out too.

P90? what kind of specifications does that have? I really don't know about computers like that to recognize what P90 means.

how much?

one other issue though is that when i posted some time ago about the possibility of upgrading my computer, some people here said that because i had a compaq and how they're designed, it would be difficult to upgrade (something about how everything is just crammed in there or something).

90 MHz vs the 3.0 gigahertz computers we have now days

I haven't taken a look at it yet, it's over my mom's house. I doubt it has any kind of good graphics card in it. 8 MB video cards were unheard of in those days.

8 MB video card isn't obsolete. Obsolete means it is so dated it is beyond use. but if you aren't running games or high graphics apps, then 8 MB will get you buy just fine now days.

But I understand your problem. I was looking for a cheap card for a family friend who does not play new computer games. The least I could find was a 16 MB card. Really too much for what he needs it for.

Hell, even I had trouble finding a geoforce 2. These damn large chain stores only carry the new ****.

Maybe you can check your phone book for a used computer store where you can trade in old computer parts.

no thanks, dissident... this 5+ year old compaq is better than that P90

but yeah... i never needed any graphics cards cause i dont really play games that much that need it but like i posted before, i bought Aliens vs Predator and it requires a 4 mb card (i got a 2)... i really just need a 4 mb...

maybe i should check the phone book but part of the problem is, i don't know quite enough about computers to deal with that kind of stuff. i know the basics but i get lost in this whole business of hertz and sdram...

90MHz? 1MB video, 2MB if you are lucky...none of them have any kind of 3D capability...

My system is pretty archaic and it has 32MB so I would be surprised if you could still get anything smaller other than in old stock clearance...

i was also told by apolytoners who i cant remember who they were that upgrading can come to nothing. for example, a 512 mb ram card won't mean much with my 266 mhz processor. would this be that big of an issue upgrading from a 2mb video card to possibly a 32 mb assuming i cant find anything lower?

Speed of the memory. 150 isn't very common. 100, and 133 are the most common, and 133 is generally your best bet. it is backwards compatible with 100. 512 mb of memory is always going to be better than 256, but you have to make sure your motherboard can handle it. If your computer is 5 years old, it can probably takes a max of 128 MB of memory in each slot. 256 at most. You need to check on that before you start spending money on memory. As for the video card. It depends on the type of agp card. You have to make sure and get one that will fit in your AGP slot.

Go by a high school, college, or university. They might have old stuff that's not needed anymore.

A mate of mine works at the university, and I got lots of old stuff from him (including an 8MB videocard).

Albert make sure that Alien v Predator doesn't need a 4Mb 'Accelerator' and not just a graphics card. if it runs under Open GL or Glide a bog standard card won't do, you my need an old Voodoo or Banshee type card

Wow... the computer is pretty damn cheap. Of course when I get a new computer it's gotta be around $2,000 to work for me and the programs I'd be running .
