What causes retirement?
I'm new to everything to do with Civ, so I apologize for the weak question. How do you get retired? Is it only if you're doing poorly in the game or is it always the same date?
I've got a good game going now, just on the brink of Modern Era, but I'm a little behind I think. It's about 2017, and I'm afraid I'm gonna get retired by 2050 like my last game. But...I am #1 in the rankings.
Thanks.

ya the game goes till 2050... you have to win before that... in one of the victory conditions... its harder to win in the limited time span if you don't win by domination in easier levels from my own experience... but people do win in rather different ways... I must just be rather restricted in my view of hte game... sigh!

If you have not met any of the other victory conditions you will get a msg to alert you 20 years before the game ends at 2050. You are allowed to play on if you want. The score will not change, if you do.

The game goes on past the maximum year, you just don't more points. Retire is just an option to exit, like quit. With retire you get to see more stuff.
