It's your lucky day!

Instead of being purged as enemies of the state you are being sent out to the field to harvest crops by hand!

The nice thing about Jesus is that he was more concerned with what people do than he was with what doctrine they held. The repeated theme of his teachings is that the doer of the word is blessed. Hearing the teachings of Jesus and not doing them is condemned in scripture. I do not believe that anyone who actually does love their neighbor as Jesus taught will ever see hell. On the other hand I think that many who call themselves Christian will never see heaven.

Most of the threatening of Jesus was directed toward hypocrites and phony religious people who used the name of God to further a particular agenda not approved by him. "He that does the truth comes to the light". The Indians and slaves persecuted by Christians in the name of manifest destiny (or any other high-sounding excuse for greed) will see the kingdom of God before their persecutors will. Wearing the name is not enough. To be a follower of Jesus it is necessary to actually do what he said. Yes, salvation is a free gift of grace but the trampling of that grace under foot by those who should be teaching it by example is a grievous sin.

These artists are all "restrained," and it's all a part of the guilt complex that American churches especially bore into everybody from day 1.

Most Churches preach so much guilt and following the rules that everyone is afraid to let loose in fear of being judged or being a sinner. So everything is so watered down and steralized.
You need to get out a bit more. You obviously know very little about CCM (contemporary Christian music). Not a personal attack, Ted, just an observation.

You know when people are full of spirit you can feel it. But all I see from these artists in an act on stage.
No, most people don't know. The "spirit" that many people seek (for example, as another mentioned, black gospel worship style) is just as much a performance and equally capable of being void of true inspiration. The eye (and taste) of the beholder is perhaps a greater influence here than actual discernment of the artists and art in question.

Most Contemporary Christian music sucks not because of the influence of the lifestyle, but because there are relatively few people who are both talented in music and willing to devote their entire careers to singing about God. There are only a few good Christian rock artists but bear in mind that you're looking at a small sample size. Even in mainstream rock, for every new Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix that comes into the light there are about a thousand punk garage bands with names like Backdoor Hopscotch Illusion whose idea of a good song is a few distorted guitar riffs, a blur of profanity intermingled with complaints about the system keeping us down, and another few ugly chords to finish 'er off. The good-to-dud ratio is the same, but there are a lot more duds so naturally a lot more good musicians who you've actually heard about.

I don't see why there would be an incompatibility between believing the teachings ascribed to Jesus are wonderful things and yet rejecting the supernatural elements.

"Love one another" requires no supernatural beliefs.
Jefferson wrote a book about this. I think it is entitled "The Life and Teachings of Jesus Christ". ....or was it "The Teachings of Jesus Christ as He Meant Them To Be"? I've forgotten, but apparently a number of copies of this book are distributed among the offices of US Senators and Congressmen. Newt Gingrich used to point to this book and wax poetically about Jefferson as one of our Christian forefathers. Evidently Newt was illiterate or he would have realised that Tom was a Deist.

Even though I am an athiest, I believe in an afterlife because there is some scientific evidence behind the existance of ghosts.

Diplo, There was a show on the Discovery channel that says Mary was raped by a roman soldier, so the virgin birth thing is BS. There is some evidence that Jesus survived his executiona nd faked death, so it appeared that he came bace to life. He then moved to southern France.
