Conservatism is cool!
James Sullivan has an interesting op-ed in the San Fransisco Gate, where he argues that Conservatism is more in tune with pop culture and thus becoming more cool.

------
For better or worse, Davis represents the present-day face of the Democratic Party in America -- apparently humorless, wonkish, staid and distant. The party of John F. Kennedy and Jesse Jackson has turned an embarrassed cheek to its own charismatic past, preferring in recent years to cast itself as efficient, businesslike and not in any way associated with the radical longhairs some of its members may have been during the dreaded 1960s.

Meanwhile, the Republicans, once considered your father's Grand Old (and hopelessly out-of-touch) Party, are addressing middle America in their own language, which is to say, their popular culture. George Bush drives a pickup truck, hams it up with Ozzy Osbourne and speaks about world affairs in simple, homely terms so "the boys back home in Lubbock" can understand.

Then tell Mr. Creationist (Diplio) to stop trolling.

The republicans are still old fasioned. Davis may stink but he is beter than a republican. The latest polls show support for the recall at 50% and Cruz Gustamonte is beating "Ahnuld" 35% to 22%. Davis won the 2002 election so republicans better quit this undemocratic bullcrap, The Republicans are trying to steal California. Californians are mostly Liberal, so if the republicans succede there must be something fishy and corrupt going on.

"Coolness" is the domain of Liberals. Conservatives view cool people as evil, amoral deviants (*cough* Thatcher and Reagan *cough*).

I am not trolling. I am dead serious.

The truth is that too many leftist come across as elitist and out of touch. That was Gore's main problem in the 2000 race, and it is Dean, Kerry's problem now.

The sad thing is that it's often true. For year (for decades ?) the conservatives have been the boring grey suit people who pretended to be bright while using tons of figures and complicated reasonings in their speeches. Despite some charismatic champions who often were made candidates (Nixon, Reagan, or in France Chirac), the bulk of the conservative politicians were bland. OTOH, in the wake of May 68, the left was much more young, dynamic, and prone to use simplistic propaganda.

It has now changed. The left has been highly intellectualized and is now mostly using technocratic jibberish. There's nobody left by the liberals to really speak to the uneducated. To some extent, that's what makes a guy like Michael Moore so special.
The right has tons of communicators who use simplistic language to have their ideas pass: Bush, Rush Limbaugh, or even French PM Raffarin, who ushers many shallow sentences looking like popular wisdom.

This communication isn't exactly 'cool', because at least in my vocabulary, 'cool' is connected with rebellious tendencies of the youth. But this conservative communication is definitely appealing to many people, simply because it is possible to grasp it.

Those are unfair stereotypes, and you know it!

Flattening cities full of innocent people? Iraq? Nope, try again.

Gay-bashing? Nope, being opposed to gay marriage is not gay bashing, sorry, try again.

Religious fundamentalism? Not all conservatives are christian. Better luck next time.

Maybe if you throw enough stereotypes against the wall, eventually something will stick, uh?

Absolutely, beating the crap out of a gay (bashing) and denying gays equal rights (gay marriage) are in fact two different things. The latter is a bigot, the former a violent bigot.

Bigot.

Of course the conservatives are cool . Watch Bill Maher's show... most of the Republicans and funny and cool (except psycho-***** Coulter ) and most of the Democrats are stuffy suited types.

This is just the "conservatives are all idots" debate only dressed differently Political alliegence has zip to do with coolness. Of course, coolness is a dime a dozen, here today gone tommorrow quality, so being cool today only mean you won;t be cool tommorrow.

As for "being in touch", most people are apolitical, so neither liberas nor conservatives (ie. anyone who is openyl political) is in touch with anyone in the majority. o give it a rest, we are all geeks here.
