Surely we can be self policing to some extent. I try to think if I have something relevant to say before posting here or in the On topic forums (sometimes I do better than others!). In the OT, it is more based on the principles of conversation.

I still say that moderation can achieve exactly the same as not counting +1. But ultimately it is up to Dan and PFC Markos Giannopoulos. I like what rah said. Tighten the moderation, maybe throw in some -10%'s for good measure. That should keep most of the SPAM at bay.

Posts not counting don't prevent spam though - one look into the OT will prove that theory quite quickly. Moderation (complete with warnings) will prevent too much exploitation of this forum.

I would bet my mortgage that if posts stopped being counted count here, the level of posting would fall of right away. (after the whining about it ended, of course)

But rah...while I can see where you're coming from, a low number of post shouldn't be a goal in itself. Quality should be. And quality is achieved much better by moderation than by posts not counting.

I agree with that. We want this forum to be vibrant, but way too many threads turn into postcounting spam fests. Actually I think posts should count. My earlier suggestion was just that, a suggestion.

If you just eliminated the ones with just

then you'd knock half the posts out of this forum.

I think the general theme all around Apolyton is one where (apart from repeat offender's on 'the list') you have to flagrantly flaunt rules or ignore warnings to get banned. I don't think this is a bad thing. What would work in A/C is more warnings in threads that look on the verge of spamdom. Like signs telling you speed cameras are ahead act as a deterrent, whether they are ahead or not, the warnings would probably work. And if not then the reprimanded poster would have no cause for complaint anyway.

**shrug** I've always believed that all forums should be treated the same in regards to postcounts — IOW, +1 should be in all of 'Poly's forums. After all, it shouldn't be *where* you post at 'Poly that counts, but the *quality* of what you contribute. So, either get rid of post counts completely, or treat all the forums equally.

Well, what about it Dan?

I'd ask Mark, but he's busy losing Greek independence in the Mountains these days.

What's the deal with faces, and why does the count matter here, and not in ot?

So what. They don't have to go in a particular order. What if a person died. Or worse yet, left Poly. That is no reason to hold up the rest of the interviews.

The OT was making the other forums feel bad. So they had to trim it's whiskers. Sorta like how the Euros have navy envy.

More like the OT was getting so spammy that something had to be done.

I'd prefer stricter moderatorship in the OT, then, rather than the rather draconian approach of simply cutting off post counts, rah.

Postcounts should be done away with. Here and most other forums, they're little more than a "Look how big my penis is?" statement and encouragment to make worthless spam posts.

Like this one.

I disagree slightly. Here, you can only have a custom avatar if you make 500 posts. This reduces the number of images stored by Apolyton because if it were possible to set your avatar from the start, single question people would register and set an avatar and never post again.

Out of habit, I checked your profile. 497.

Then I looked at your birthdate.

EDIT - Didn't reply properly

I agree with you about single post people. Actually, get rid of avatars too. Most of the inane pics used as avatars (including mine) are a pain for dial-up users.

I've never met someone who had the same birthday as me before. Closest was the 9th. How old are you turning?

Control Panel -> Edit Options -> Show user's avatar in their posts? -> No.
I tried browsing with sigs, avatars, and attachments turned off for a while. It was really fast.

I've tried that, but the board looks so bland.

I thought that way too, when if first happened, but since then, I've come to agree with their decision. There is still some spam, but it has been reduced considerably.

edit: missed seeing the second page.

But on the birthday thing, in elementary school, I had two classmates with the same birthday (including the year) and my grandpa had the same day 73 years earlier.

Yep, it's a small world.
I share a birthday, (the same year even) with another less popular Mod here.
