Running over the bike might make a metalic sound a little like safety plates. Of course the horrific screams the victims might not…

yeah and the fact the kid was attached to the car for some distance and she should have saw them.

We had a case where a drunk driver drove a couple of miles with a dead guy on his windshield.

I'm sure that her lawyer advised her not to apologize or even express regret, since that could be construed as an admission of guilt and they were pleading "not guilty." Blame the lawyer, or blame an adversarial system of justice, but not her.

Honestly, I can't believe how cold people are in this thread. She's a freaking high school student; she hit some kids and panicked. I wouldn't want her as my babysitter, but a year in jail is going to scar her for life; surely that's enough.

Oh, and japher: the "P" in YUPpie stands for "professional" -- as in someone who has an upper-middle-class job and income. This is not a Yuppie. This is a child.

She's 18. She's not a child.

She's 18 now. The accident happened in January. Odds are she was 17 then, though the article doesn't say one way or the other. But at any rate, she hasn't even graduated high school. She's a kid.

And yet she killed a person and tried to run away from it.

It is a shame, as your smiley indicates. It shows a lack of maturity -- which is consistant with being a kid. I don't think she's the victim here, but I do feel sorry for her, too.

But that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the year in jail for this.

The year in jail would seem about right if she took responsibility for the accident. Accidents happen, and since she was sober, she wasn't especially likely to make one.

But the fact that she ran and tried to avoid responsibility as much as possible, the fact she tried to get away with it makes it much worse IMHO

Pretty much this 18 y.o. girl hits two little girls; killing one and breaking the leg of the other one. Then, she ran for it. She gets 1 year in jail (probation in 8 mo.) plus 5 years probation, 1000 hours community service, and a $10,000 fine.

I think she got off light, what do you think?

She killed some one for christ sake! Then she wouldn't own up to it, and all she gets is 1 year!

Damn, I wish I was rich!

Only in Palo Alto.

What do you think?

Don't worry, this princess and her rich ass parents will likely be sued in Civil Court by the parents of the girl she killed for money.

I think people like them only understand money, so justice will be served.

Oh, I agree. And I think she should never be able to drive again. My disagreement is mostly with those who think this has something to do with her income level (she got the maximum under CA law; how, exactly, did her money help her?) or with the characterization of her as a b!tch (which just seems misogynistic). As for her "trying to get away with it," I'd bet good money that once she fled the scene in a panic, that was the last decision she made; everything from then on was in the hands of her parents and their attorney. And I'll bet those parents fought like hell to keep their kid out of jail, and I can't blame them; if my daughter ever accidently killed someone, I'd be sick at heart but I'd still fight for her with everything I had.

The thing that boggles my mind here is that the parents didn't go for a plea, which probably would have eliminated jail time altogether. That seems like a gross miscalculation on their parts -- and, again, I feel bad for the kid.

I wouldn't be so quick to hand out judgement. How would we all respond if we were in a similar situation? We like to say we would stay, be of the greatest assistance and take full responsibility for everything, but until we are put in that situation, it is just guessing. Certainly we would hope we would be responsible in this kind of scenario, and perhaps we would; however, we will never know for sure(hopefully).
