Modern era overhaul
Quote:
On the matter of new features, a lot of work has gone into embellishing the end game of Civ, offering high tech units like Flak Cannons, SAM Rockets and even TOW infantry. Oh, and you need a boost in morale? How 'bout starting the Space Race with a neighboring civ? That's one small step for you, one giant step for you kicking the other guy's ass.

BtW.. what is TOW Infantry?

you can now create a police force to prevent civil unrest in your cities. Or, later in the game, you might want to create a Secret Police Headquarters in your capitol, to downright wipe civil unrest off the map.
These both sound very good but is there a downside to the police force? And how is it built, as a city improvement?

Is the Secret Police HQ a small wonder, why do they specifically mention building it in your capitol?

It will be interesting to see how a democracy with SPHQ will stack up against a WW-free gov't like Facsism.

But overall .

Police is a city specialist, so that's one less pop point working the fields and mines.

At least thats how I think it is.

It means infantry equipped with anti-tank weapons.

TOW means Tube-launched, Optically guided, Wire-controlled missile.

The article was wrong. Police get rid of corruption. SPHQ is only for communism and acts as a third Forbiden Palace.

It will be nice having a little more stagity involved. I was always
angry that you had to shoot down a plane with a plane now you can fortify your borders with flak cannons. but wont the
AI just do that and make it impossible for air missions?
I juss that makes Stealth fighters more usefull.

The way that air missions are performed (i.e., they don't "travel" a route) would make it so guarding your borders won't work. You will have to guard the actual targets. Flack units probably only protect targets in the same tile, though possibly adjacent ones.

We'll find out when we get it.

Well the aircraft system in Civ3, IMHO, is much better than previous versions and SMAC. I always hated manually moving a plane tile by tile to a target (and of course you had to fly around things you didn't want to hit). The point and click action of Civ3 is much better.

That being the case, with this system your air defences protect particular points on the map. That's probably the only way they could do it without tremendous amounts of programming. And I think it makes some RL sense. When you're away from the target you can use various tricks to avoid detection. But when you attempt a final appraoch to the target is often when you will be most visible. So... it may not be entirely accurate, but it's rationalizable.

Do you remember the best Civ2 air defense strategy?

Empy Air Fields (could even stop a Nuke ).

I was thinking it would be a little like the Anti-Tank in the teturkahan Senario. The anti-tank is just foot unit artilary and maby in conquests it would be better aginst tanks.
