Standard Rules vs AU Mod
Since I discovered the AU Mod, I have never gone back to the Standard rules. It seems far superior in play balance and IMO greatly helps an AI in great need of that help.

Whats your take? AU or Strandard?

I developed my own mod, then incorporated what I liked from the AU Mod. Major difference is that I greatly increased ship movement since I mostly play on larger maps.

Anyway, I'm never going back to vanilla, if only because I can't stand how slow the ships are.

... almost as much as my mod does!
(which utilizes many of the AU changes, but was not hampered by "minimalizing" the changes wrought).

I pretty much fluctuate. I play AU mod for SP games and AU games, but vanilla for the various democracy games I'm part of.

BTW, since no one has yet mentioned it, AU is Apolyton University from the strategy forum. Besides being found there, it will also be one of the inclusions of the special CD shipping with pre-orders of Conquests

I never played the AU mod, but looking through the readme, I found this, which was interesting:

Quote:
Action: Added Communism-specific improvement (Secret Police).
Reduces corruption, veteran units, cost 40, zero upkeep.
I thought this was interesting since C3C has the Secret Police Headquarters which is a communist small wonder that acts a a forbidden palace (actually weaker than this unit here).

There are several things going into C3C that came out of various player mods. One thing I was happy to see (which my mod already incorporates) is that map and communication trading are being pushed back into the Middle Ages. The map was always revealed way too early in Civ3/PTW.

I think the AU mod provides a good chance of pace from standard rules, but I prefer standard rules

It depends on why you play the game.

If you like to compare your games and strategies with others who play with standard rules, the AU mod is not for you.

The AU mod tries to balance the elements of the game, so that the player has to think harder about his unit, improvement, government, and research decisions. It also tries to strengthen the AI so that it can provide more of a challenge in the late game.

Some AU games use the AU mod, so you can get the best of both worlds.

That's cool! One of the great advances civ2 has over civ3 is that in civ2 you can explore the world. In civ3 you just buy a map...

Imo the manual is useless. There have been too many changes in patches since the game was released.
